Details emerge of New Orleans East gun battle

New Orleans Police investigators say they have pieced together what led to a deadly shooting at a New Orleans East residence yesterday which left three victims and a suspect dead.  Cops say it all started when the suspects went to a residence to smoke marijuana, and then used the residents' own guns against them

The incident was the latest in a string of New Year's vioent crime that left twelve people dead in as many days.

Police say Andrea Price and Jubbard Price, two 21-year-old cousins, and an unidentified man went to a home on Devine Street to smoke marijuana with five acquaintances who lived at the residence.  Detectives say the unidentified man had recently stayed in the same residence, and knew of a stash of guns inside the home.

Detectives believe that when some of the group went to the garage to smoke the weed, Jubbard Price and the unidentified man got access to the stash of guns and opened fire on the others.  Investigators say Jubbard Price and the unknown suspect then fled the home in a vehicle.

One of the occupants home, 60-year-old Reyland Berry, reportedly gave chase and opened fire upon the three suspects, but missed.  That’s when police say the unidentified suspect returned fire, striking Berry fatally in the head.

Officers say a witness called in a description of the suspects and their car, which was spotten minutes later on Louisa street.   A police press release describes what happened next:

“Andrea Price and Jubbard Price exited the vehicle, followed by the driver, who was armed with a .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun.  He fired at officers. The officers returned fire, wounding both Andrea and Jubbard Price, and fatally wounding the unidentified man.”

Police say Jubbard Price was treated and released from the hospital, then confessed to his role in the shootings.  He faces four counts of first-degree murder.

Investigators say Andrea Price sustained a gunshot wound to the buttocks and will also face four counts of first-degree murder upon her release.

In addition to the deaths of the three residents of the home, the suspects also will face a charge of murder in the death of their accomplice.

“This was not a random act that happened between strangers.  In this case, drugs were involved.  Multiple guns were involved,” according to NOPD Chief Ronal Serpas.  “And the perpetrators and victims we’ve identified all had previous records and some were certainly no strangers to the criminal justice system.”

Following the shootout with police, cops later found what they believe to be live hand grenades in the vehicle, leading to the evacuation of police headquarters for a time.  Chief Ronal Serpas later described the grenades as "duds" which had no explosive components.

The NOPD describes the arrest records of the shooters and victims as the following:
