Palermo: Miles says Jefferson and Lee deserve to play

LSU is 10-and-0 for the first time since 1958 and possibly on its way to its third BCS National Championship in nine years. But the quarterback position remains a bit of a question mark heading into Saturday's game against Ole Miss.

Jordan Jefferson started his first game of the season on Saturday in the 42-9 win over Western Kentucky. Jefferson completed 8 of 14 for 168 yards and one touchdown. Jarrett Lee didn't take his first snap until the 4th quarter, but led the Tigers on a touchdown drive while completing 2 of 4 passes for 15 yards and one touchdown.

So who will be the quarterback this Saturday? Head Coach Les Miles said they'll make a decision later in the week and decisions on who is the signal caller will be made on a game-by-game basis, if not a play-by-play basis.

"I really think that it is specific to whom we play and how those guys are playing," Miles said. "We need both. We will use both."

Miles was later asked if he likes a two quarterback system. But Miles said he would rather have just one quarterback or two quarterbacks that have same the skills set. Of course Jefferson and Lee are different types of QBs, but both are needed to win a championship this season.

"I have two quarterbacks who deserve to play and two quarterbacks that have different skills," Miles said. "With that being said, I want both those skill sets on the field. It just happens to benefit our team in a long season and hopefully in a championship run to have quarterbacks ready to play."

LSU's opponent this Saturday, Ole Miss, wishes they had LSU's problems. The Rebels have only pride to play for against the Tigers. They are 2-and-8 and coming off a home loss to Louisiana Tech.

It's already been announced head coach Houston Nutt will not be back for the 2012 season. Out of all of the coaches in the Southeastern Conference, Nutt has had the most success against Miles. He's 3-and-3 against the Tigers coach, including a win over the Bayou Bengals in 2007 when they were ranked number one.

Ole Miss has been hit this season with a bunch of injuries and inexperience. Thirteen freshmen are listed on the Rebels two-deep depth chart. Twenty-three of their players in the two-deep are freshmen or sophomores.

Honeybadger Humbled

LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu spoke for the first time to the media on Monday since he was suspended for allegedly failing a drug test. Mathieu said the punishment has humbled him and forced him to grow up fast.

Mathieu admitted that all the hype he received and Heisman Trophy consideration may have affected him. The sophomore also plans on toning down the thrash talking with opponents, but he also admits that fires him and his teammates up.
