Number 1 vs. number 2. What else do you want if you're a sports fan? Even the most casual college football fan will watch this game unfold on Saturday night. Alabama is a 4.5 point favorite and it's hard to imagine this game will be decided by more than a touchdown.
It's the third time these two schools have met in November with undefeated records. Alabama won the two previous meetings. In 1972, an undefeated Crimson Tide team handed the Tigers their first loss of the season with a 35-21 victory. A 9-and-0 Alabama team in 1973 won again, beating the previously unbeaten Tigers 21-7.
There's been numerous talking heads giving their keys to this one. So I'll give you five more things to look for when the “Game of the Century” kicks off at 7 PM in Tuscaloosa.
1. Quick Start
Bryant-Denny Stadium will have an electric atmosphere, so it will be important for LSU to take the wind out of the home crowd's sails early. LSU has been a fast starter all season, scoring first in every game they've played. The Tigers have scored on its first drive in every game except for two.
Alabama has given up only 55 points, but 30 of them have come in the first quarter. The Tigers defense also needs to do something to rattle sophomore quarterback AJ McCarron. An interception, a sack, maybe a three and out, don't allow him to get too comfortable.
2. Injuries
Both teams are relatively healthy, but there will be injuries as this game goes on. The two teams are just too physical.
Last season, Alabama running back Trent Richardson had just six carries, before he had to leave with an abdominal injury. Two years ago, LSU running back Charles Scott was knocked out with a broken collarbone and quarterback Jordan Jefferson left with an ankle injury. You can bet there will be some key injuries and LSU's depth will be a factor.
3. Wing and a Prayer
In a game where field position will be crucial, the Tigers need another big game from LSU punter Brad Wing. The Australian leads the SEC with a 44 yard average per punt. Opposing teams are averaging just two feet, not two yards, but two feet a return on punts.
Alabama has a great return man in Marquis Maze, but Wing's hang-time on punts and his ability to down punts inside the ten has the potential to keep Maze a non-factor.
The whole prayer part of this equation is the Tigers ability to pull off fake field goals and punts. Head Coach Les Miles' trick plays on special teams have always worked. This would not be a good time for one to fail. But you know Miles has something under his hat.
4. Jarrett Lee comes full circle?
Jordan Jefferson will get his share of snaps, but LSU wins this game, if Jarrett Lee plays an efficient game and hits a couple big plays through the air. Four years ago, Lee started against Alabama and threw four interceptions during a season when he threw 16. And yes one of those interceptions against Alabama was returned for a touchdown.
Lee's story is remarkable. But for it to have a Hollywood ending, the fifth-year senior needs a big game against the Tide.
Lee's career stats against Alabama....He's completed 41% of his passes for 292 yards, one touchdown and five interceptions.
5. LSU's O-Line vs. Bama's Linebackers
Alabama plays a 3-4 defense and the Tigers offensive line will need to put a hat on the Bama linebackers to open the running game. Dont'a Hightower, Courtney Upshaw, and Nico Johnson are top notch backers. Upshaw is also excellent at rushing the passer.
Also keep an eye on Alabama nose guard Josh Chapman. He only has 13 tackles on the season, but it takes two people to block the 310-pounder. Chapman makes life a lot easier for Hightower, Upshaw and safety Mark Barron.
It's good that LSU is getting center P.J. Lonergan back, after missing the last two games with an ankle injury.
Prediction...I like LSU to win 24-20. The Tigers win the battle of field position, take care of the football and Jarrett Lee throws two touchdown passes for an unforgettable victory in Tuscaloosa.
