Drew Brees' contract remains unsettled with talks reportedly at a standstill. It looks as if any chance for a resolution before the team's organized team activities begin on May 22nd is slim to none.
"Obviously at this point, we haven't missed anything with him," Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. said. "The guys are in the weight room. Obviously we're going to miss the leadership he brings, but this is going to be an opportunity for Chase Daniel and Sean Canfield to get more reps, and for us to get a good look at those guys."
Brees' desire for a long-term deal is just another cloud hanging over the Saints this offseason. The fact that the savior of football in New Orleans hasn't been taken care of though is more disturbing than any coach, GM or player suspension.
The Saints do have until midnight on July 15th to sign Brees to a long term deal, but it would make a heck of a lot more sense to not have this be a distraction in training camp and throughout the offseason. July 16 is the deadline for players designated with franchise tags to be signed, and if Brees is forced to accept it he'll be paid $16.3 million next season.
How far apart are the two sides? No one outside the talks is really sure, but according to some reports Brees is seeking $21 million dollars a season. The Saints reportedly want to pay him in the neighborhood of $18 million to $19 million dollars a year.
Assistant coach Joe Vitt has assumed the role of head coach during Sean Payton's one year absence. A reporter asked him if he needs to talk with General Manager Mickey Loomis in regards to getting a deal done with Brees.
"I've never been a math major, and I'm not an accounting major... so there's nothing I could advise Mickey to do than what he already knows how to do," Vitt responded. "Those guys are both on the same page and have the same aspirations and same goals. This is going to get done. I don't think anybody ever thought it was going to be easy. I think they're both working to the same goal."
I dunno...I for one thought that it was going to be easy. Everyone knows how much Brees means to the team and to the city, so why can't they "dot the i's and cross the t's" on a long term deal that will keep the best QB in the NFL in black and gold for the rest of his career?
It's hard to imagine the franchise wanting to nickel and dime the guy who helped do something NOBODY thought would ever happen here...hoist the Lombardi trophy.
After talking to the coaching staff you get the sense that no one is panicking. Either these guys are the best poker players in the world, or they know that in the end #9 will get his deal.
"Obviously we want him in the building. We just have to go forward with what's here right now," Carmicheal said. "Obviously Drew and Mickey Loomis are going to get this worked out. We can't spend time worrying about it. We have to move forward. We're going to keep the same volume of what we're going to install and just go from there."
Vitt added with conviction, "The only thing that Drew has missed to this point right now is the conditioning program. When Drew reports, he's going to be the best conditioned athlete on our football team, so there has been no time lost."
Seriously? You think an offer of 19 million is to nickle and dime someone? Your thoughts on this are very simplistic. They don't just hand over money. There are a few other things to think about. There's the salary cap coupled with needing to pay other people. Drew can't get out there and play by himself, you know.
It's all based on market value.....
and i's all relative. More completions, More yards and best completion % in the league EVER last year. $19M isn't market value! He wants $21M...? Give him $22!
Considering everything this man has done not only on the field but in the community - What do we (the communmity) have to do, pass the hat and make up the difference to keep someone who has become a local treasure. I can promise you everyone at the Saints organization is getting their's - Give the man his. He has proven himself beyond expectations.
just make it happen
hes the best in the league...give him $22!!!!
sign him, or get off the pot
He's only the best QB ever to play for the Saint's - Archie included. There's alot of teams who will be glad to give him $21 million - like Miami.
Put Up or Shut Up
I agree with Deke and Bobby, Mr. Benson needs to get in their and find out what exactly is going on. We have signed all kinds of other players and i know they are needed too but there is no reason why they can't pay Drew what he's asking for and to get it done now before they p--- him off and he's out for the whole training camp. We the fans and ticket holders have been on the roller coaster with the Saints so this should be their #1 Priority, this man deserves every nickel he is asking for. I don't want Drew to stay b/c they forced him to, I want him to want to be our leader. Pay Drew Brees, Sign Drew Brees!
A tag on Brees? Only a pig is willing to do that
Drew Brees at least has earned the privilege to be treated with more respect: it is perfectly OK that Benson does not want to pay him as much; but at least allow him to sell himself to the open market.
As soon as Benson tagged someone like Brees, you know what kind of a pig Benson really is.
Brees will dump Benson. A decent owner is what Brees needss
it is ok Benson does not want to pay
it is even also on if Benson wants to tag anybody else.
Drew Brees has earned the right of being treated with decency: you don't want to pay him? All right. Show your appreciatio of his service and let him go.
You don't tag and lowball him. That is what only a pig will do.
You tag Brees? It is just like you give him the middle finger.
and so-called fans...
You so-called fans are nothing but wh***s. You blame Brees. You li*k benson pig's as*. What a pity. There is nothing more corrupt than NOLA things --- politicians, business misers, and fans. These things don't deserve anything good.
TO THE TROLL
Stay off our board troll ^^^
Ya just give him the entire payroll. I mean drew dosent need 21 other guys - right? What a terrbile article. The saints dont need more things like this written. Mickey will do whats best for the Saints, including sign brees. Where did you guys find this Steve cat?
dont think this article says give Brees the entire payroll, but you have to agree this is all a bit disturbing.
maybe if Loomis and crew werent so busy putting their ducks in a row or chasing women Drew would have a deal in place
GIVE THE MAN A SIGNING BONUS!!! If I understand correctly, a bonus doesn't count against the salary cap. Give him a $10M or $12M signing bonus to make up the difference. He's proven himself. He has the stats. He's not a gamble-he's a known commodity. Show him the money - NOW!!!!
wouldnt the orginatzion want to shed a postive light on the franchise already
im tired of all the negative pub and could use some good news
Stop BULSH*** and sign Brees. It's time for Benson to get involved. Enough already.
*****AMEN***** Give him the dome after you reshape into Brees!!! Whatever you have to do ...DO IT!!!!! This getting on my last nerve!!! Oh and build a big statue of him....use the Saban statue metal ...Saban don't need no darn statue! Puhleese!! Welove you Brees!!! Hope you and your wife have a beautiful, heatlty baby!!
Sports fans are FUN
Always amusing to read comments from "fans"........First it was Brees is greedy, now Benson is a pig......c'mon, really?? Folks, it's BUSINESS.....live it, learn it...
Steve, you are right, this deal will get done. The timetable only DB and the Saints know. What options do they have...force the tag, let DB walk? Are u kidding me....there would be riots in the street.....Finally the "Sign DB Song"...brilliant! Peace "fans"...it'll be alright!
Chase Can Get It Done
I don't think we need to overpay on Brees. He is good, no doubt but Chase has been watching him for years and could easily step in as the starter. Give Chase a chance!!
Chase can learn by watching?
Like I can learn to fly by watching the birds! He must have innate talent, and lots of experience behind the center before he'll be a replacement for the best QB in the NFL.
OWN WORSE ENEMY!!
GODELL IS NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT IS TRYING TOO KEEP US FROM A CHAMPIONSHIP IN OUR HOME TOWN ,WE ARE DOING A GOOD JOB OURSELVE BY NOT SIGNING BREES,WE CAN BE OUR OWN WORSE ENEMY.SIGN DREW A LET PERPARE FOR THE RETURN TOO THE SUPERBOWL.
Chase can get it done????
To the man who says Chase has been watching Drew for years and can get it done I ask how many years did Curtis Painter and Dan Orlavsky watch Peyton Manning. It just ain't the same.
This is ridiculous!!!
Sign Drew!!!! I am very disappointed in the Saints organization for letting this get this far!!! Here we are trying to make another run to the Superbowl in our Superdome and they have to mess up everything!!! What are you waiting for Loomis??!!! This will not look good on your Resume!!!
I really think this much more complex than just handing him 21 million...there are many factors to be considered. I this they will pay him what he will ba happy with...maybe not EXACTLY 21 million...but there will be some gray area they will meet at. ButI DO think the Saints organization are thinking of having other quality players happy and paid also. They have to share that salary cap and spread it wisely.
Time to move on!!
Come on Loomis, get off of it. We need Drew and the rest of the team. Give him what he wants. He's worth every penny. And yes, I know he can't do it alone. We need to move on and prepare for the Superbowl Win this year. The Saints have been treated so unfairley and they should all come out fighting hard this year to show the D----NFL we can do it again regardless of their foolishness! Go Saints!!
I believe Drew Brees would have been signed already if it weren't for the distractions that Goodell has caused with this whole Bounty scandal. I think once they get everything figured out involving bounty gate(which should be soon!) they will find a way to pay Brees. I doubt the Saints organization is that stupid to let him go, since if they let him go then they are going to loose a lot of respect from the fans and possibly loose $$$ .
And yet Drew says...
The #'s being played out in the media are exaggerated and off from what's on the bargaining table. I still believe it'll get done but he's frustrated with the lack of communication. Hopefully this will light a fire under some hineys!
All Saints fans should not purchase anything Saint related until Drew gets his money. He has given everything possible to the Saints and this city. When the last time Mr. Benson or anyone in management threw for a touchdown let alone a first down but they get paid to make stupid decisions like not getting Drew signed. PAY THE MAN. GIVE HIM THE MONEY. Until Drew is signed we have no chance in hell of winning a single game. Until Drew gets paid the Saints aren’t getting paid. BOYCOTT
Saints Pep Rally
Saints Pep Rally. Saints Pep Rally. As a fan base, and for those fans that are local, we need to act soon. A statement has to be made directly to Mr. Benson. New Orleans and its fans put on the biggest post Super Bowl celebration that the NFL has ever seen. The Super Bowl party continued during the entire off season. It is time to show Mr. Benson that same kind of spirit, once again. At this point, talk is cheap. Action is now required. I am asking on many forums, for the local Saints fans to prepare for a Saints Pep Rally. About 50,000 fans should send the message. On a given Friday, at 6 pm central time, right as the NFL network is about to air NFL’s Total Access, and before the July 16 deadline to sign Drew to a long term contract has come and gone, the 50,000 strong Saints Pep Rally should take place at the Saints training facility. The theme will be simple. PAY DREW BREES! SIGN DREW NOW! Saints fans, we can not put Drew in a position to accept a one year contract, because of the love he has for our city and fan base. We need to back him, now. I want him happy and focused on the upcoming season. I want him to know, that we appreciate what he has done for the region, and simply put, we have his back. To all Saints fans, feel free to post this idea in any forum you desire and begin organizing with your friends to pick a Friday date, soon.
