The Saints will have a new center in 2014. The Chicago Bears have signed former Saints center Brian de la Puente to a 1 year deal according to the team’s website. Brian de la Puente took over the Saints full time starter in 2011. The terms of the contract were not disclosed by Chicago. The Saints have shown a history of not re-signing free agent centers; Jeff Faine Left in free agency in 2008, Jonathan Goodwin in 2011 and now de la Puente in 2014.
The next man up appears to be two-year veteran Tim Lelito. Lelito made the Saints as an undrafted rookie free agent last season out of Grand Valley State. He played the “swing" offensive lineman role as back up at guard and center last season. The Saints might grab a veteran center on the open market, but it appears as though Lelito will get the first crack at the job.
Former Saints Center Jonathan Goodwin is currently a free agent, and he could be an option for New Orleans.
Do you think they can ask Alex Mack for a visit and sign him?.. and wouldn't he be a great fit?
de la puente
Just read the story on Chicago Tribune. He is going to the Bears to be a backup this year &
maybe start in 2015? Also mentioned he had an offer to be a backup in Detroit. And he started for us for 3 years???
Maybe he was part of our inability to run the ball!
de la Puente not resigned
Virtually anyone that we put there improves the running game. If that improves, Brees becomes less likely to get
sacked and the whole offense improves. However, LARGE contracts to just a few players cause us to not be able to design and keep an effective offensive line.
Draft a center in the third round.
Draft a center in the third round. Enough said.
Would love to have Jonathan Goodwin back, but I think Tim can handle the job. Lelito is a valuable lineman in that he can play more than one position.....We'll be alright at the center position......
