Deke: Bobby & Hokie note missteps on offense

The New Orleans Saints worked for over two hours and twenty minutes today during their fifth padded practice. The overcast skies and breeze made things seem like a fall Louisiana day up here in West Virginia. Our resident pros, Hokie and Bobby gave me their notes on how they saw today's practice.

For the last several days we've talked about how the Saints offense has the upper hand on the defense when it comes to running the football. But at Friday's practice, the Cajun Cannon was inspired by what he saw out of the D: "The defense won that battle today. I thought 75-80% of the time in running drills, the defense looked better than the offense.  Now I want to see if the defense can do it again tomorrow in the scrimmage!"

Bobby's Take

The best run play by the offense saw RB Travaris Cadet make a nice cutback. "Cadet had good vision and did a nice job of picking up good yardage."  Bobby said that WR Brandin Cooks again stood out as he hauled in a 40 yard grab in one-on-one action.

In special teams work, kicker Shayne Graham was 2-of-3, missing a 48 yarder. "That was the first miss by either kicker thus far during camp," Bobby noted.  K Derek Dimke was 3-for-3 this morning.  Dimke's longest kick was also for 48 yards.

WR Andy Tanner stood out this morning.  "Tanner had a great practice today.  In Red Zone seven-on-seven work he had a 20 yard TD grab from QB Luke McCown," Hebert said.

Brees had two fumbled snaps with Jonathan Goodwin at center. Bobby said he's never seen a miscomunication between Brees and his center like this morning.

Hokie's Call

Hokie thought the Saints offense looked a little off today.  "I thought they looked sloppy at times. There were a couple of bad exchanges between Brees and Goodwin, and there were some dropped balls out there.  The offense did not look as sharp as they have."

Hokie also pointed out a few skirmishes that took place this morning.  One that caught his eye took place between DL Tyrunn Walker and OT Zach Strief.  "They kind of got into it.  They were both swinging at each other, and you don't typically see that between veteran players."

Hokie agreed that WR Andy Tanner had a good day and he liked the way the Saints run defense looked during the inside drill.  Gajan wants to see how the Saints offense will respond in tomorrow's "Black and Gold Scrimmage" after having their poorest day of training camp so far.

The Saints will scrimmage in the morning at the Advocare Facility at the Greenbrier and our coverage of practice begins at 7:00am sharp.

Hokie and Bobby will open up their entire notebooks this afternoon as they breakdown practice on Sports Talk, plus hear from Sean Payton, DB Pierre Warren, RB Mark Ingram and LB Parys Haralson and C Jonathan Goodwin.
