Deke Bellavia: Saints on the Road? Again?

bigchief@wwl.com
@dekebigchief

Man oh man, this Saints/Rams loss was bad.  We all know how disturbing and disheartening the 27-16 loss was.  Some call it the biggest loss in the Payton/Brees era.  We also know what this team is capable of doing.

In 2006 the Saints were amazing with a unique story that grabbed the world’s attention.  In 2009 the Saints were just better than everybody they beat.  In 2010 the Saints fought their way to a playoff spot.  And, in 2011 (many of us still feel very strongly) the Saints were a team that could have and perhaps would have won the Super Bowl.

And, this season is this season.  So far the Saints are hailed as a team that’s not good on the road.  And if “team” is the main concept, I guess we have to take a look at the glass half full instead of half empty.  Even though the Saints are playing badly, they are playing badly as a team.

In their last four road games the Saints played consistently poorly in all phases of the game--offense, defense and special teams.  They’ve come up short of expectations in every way.

I will not relive all of those bad moments.  Let’s not live in the past.  Let’s look forward.  Now at 3-4 on the road with one road game left, time is running out for the Saints to look formidable when they’re away from the Mercedes Benz Superdome.

Even Coach Payton opened his post-game press conference basically saying how disappointed he is in his team’s play on the road.  And Payton said the Saints have to question themselves on many fronts about what kind of team they are.

The Saints are not a good road team.  And now they’ve been called to check themselves by their head coach…after Coach Payton first checked himself by taking responsibility for this loss.  Now with their backs against the wall…facing a first round road playoff game, if not a more severe dent into what looked to be a promising post season…the Saints face a must win situation at Carolina.

The Saints will have to perform far better and win.  If they don’t, it’s only going to get more difficult to deal with the moniker “road dog or dog on the road.”  So, which is it?  Why does this team play so poorly on the road?  I don’t know how to drop the science on that.

But I will tell you, if the Saints don’t win their next road game against the Panthers… the most important game… this team could find themselves not talking about how bad they are on the road but how they won’t even get to play on the road, again!

Mama's cooking

PASSION VS PAYCHECK
Loomis needs to draft players with passion and less people who are about individual records & collecting a weekly paycheck. While Ingram has had a horrible year at least he shows interest & passion each play ! Bring back the bats to Bank of America stadium

Brees = $100 million
Everyone happy to have an elite qB ? With Brees his salary we are getting exactly what we paid for an excellent qB with no offensive stars

Please get off the Brees thing
OK, here they come again, we need to get rid of Brees (heard that this morning on Tommy's show)......Brees getting the big contract is the problem........Get off of this people.....The Saints have plenty of talent, they just played terribly yesterday..........they need more passion, not talent.........this is on Coach Payton (just wait, it won't be long before they will saying he needs to got too!!) geez bigbadave

Time to tell the truth
Sean Payton is a terrible run play caller and game manager. We clearly know who is the best back on the roster, and dont get enough toches in the passing/screen game(Ingram). Sean have to realize a 17-13 win on the road is a good win. Have to stick to run, and make the defense coordinator coach on the other side coach and stop just planning for the pass. We pass the ball 77% of the time. Drew Brees won 7 game last year wih worst defense in NFL history. Let him make the call on the field with elite defense, maybe they will get tired. Just a point.

Bells and whistles
We are so high on Brees and Payton that we forgot to address the loss of our two best linemen and loss of the line coach. Everyone focuses on the engineer that we don't notice the guys in the hole pouring the coals to make it move

Come'on Man
Blame anyone you want..Bree's gets all the money so their is little left for a decent o-line. Charles Brown isn't even close to being a legit tackle in the NFL. Sean Payton pass happy and undisciplined and predictable play calling is ridiculous. Our WEAK core of mediocre linebackers and undersized DB's give up on plays and simply are not smart or aggressive tacklers. BUT, ultimately it is Drew Bree's that needs to get his head right... The man has more highs and lows than a roller coaster.

Run the ball
We need to run the ball coaches have fail our team if Drew has to pass 50 times a game our coaches have failed the only way we make a run in the playoffs is if we run the ball Sean you had year to figure out how to run the ball if we don't run the ball drew will not last so let's run the ball
12/16/2013 11:07PM
We have Offense stars
We have stars on offense. Besides Drew Brees we have probably the best tight End in the league. And we have a solid receiver was Marcus Colston. I agree there is times we need to run the football more. Our offensive line needs to improve and maybe it's because we don't run block that well. But our offense needs to have more balance. Even coach Peyton said that. I personally believe it's not too late to start putting together some sort of a run game with our offense.

Drew Brees
I swear when Drew Brees is looking up and standing on his tippy toes to throw a pass, he is looking at the jumbo-tron to find his receiver.
12/19/2013 1:26PM
Linemen
Nicks was irreplaceable. Grubbs is flat out terrible in this offense. Drew needs the middle of the offensive line to have no collapse. Since Nicks left, this has not happened. He has no room to step up. Need the middle to step up, or move on!!
