Earlier this week I had the opportunity to interview New Orleans Pelicans General Manager Dell Demps. Demps talked with me about a variety of topics dealing with his team as he prepares for this week’s NBA Draft. . Below are a few of the high points of our interview:
Dell Demps on the job he has done as New Orleans GM: “I'll need some more time to think about that. With so many changes and so many thing going on. It's too early to judge right now. First, I'm thankful for this job and the opportunity. I think in a few years we will be able to look back and see how things came together for the New Orleans Pelicans.”
Demps on the strengths of the Pelicans: “I think it's our core players. I also think it's our coaching staff and our financial position. Our average age is 24 and some of our players are just hitting their prime. We hope to keep the core together and add some pieces. The goal is sustained success.”
On second year player Austin Rivers: “Let's call it what it was…he (Rivers) did not play well to start the season. We threw him out to the fire. Eric (Gordon) was hurt and we just threw him out there. Austin had to learn on the fly. In February the light started to click on for him and he started to play better. And then he broke his hand. He was very upset when he got hurt. His care factor is unbelievable and you root for those kind of guys.”
On whether Eric Gordon will be healthy to start the season: “I hope so! He (Gordon) injured himself last year during our off season program. We thought his injury was minor but he missed a lot of games last year. We hope to keep him healthy. That's part of the game right now. Every team has injuries.”
On getting the new name of the team right: “I get it now. I understand Pelicans a lot and I love the name. At first I was slipping a little bit. But now I've got it down.”

Key Numbers: 94.1 points per game averaged scoring (24th NBA) / Allowed 97.9 per game (17th). New Orleans was 11th in NBA is 3 point percentage at 36.3% and the Pelicans were tied for 6th in the league
Dealer Dell should trade a package including Gordon and a sign-&-trade of Aminu as a POWER forward to Orlando for that 2nd overall pick they're shopping. Pelicans select Porter 2nd and Burke 6th.
This gives Orlando the superstar they won't get from this draft and a young, explosive, athletic PF with plenty of upside to compliment their nicely developing center; Gordon plus that frontcourt is a nice inside/outside game for years to come. If they want more for the pick, Pelicans can throw in the contracts of Vasquez or Lopez
