It’s hard to imagine that we are crossing over the halfway point of the 2012 prep football season. All teams have already begun district play, or will begin it tonight. Now, with the implementation of the LHSAA Power Point System that began back in 1999, district titles don’t carry the same weight when filling out the playoff field in each of the five classes. But winning a district title is without question a special goal that is on the short list of things for teams to accomplish during a season.
Many coaches' list of goals includes having a winning record or being undefeated through non-district play, winning their district, and earning a spot in the playoffs...and of course, the ultimate goal is to win a state title.
Tonight my show will originate from the place where I cut my teeth, the place that I call home, and of course the place I went to school and graduated from...That is Amite High School. The Warriors will host their long-time arch rival Independence in a clash of district 8-3A powers.
The district used to belong to just Amite and Independence, but over the years, other teams (including this year’s favorite Loranger, along with Jewel Sumner and Bogalusa) have all made runs and performed well in the post season.
So tonight I invite you all to stop by 870 AM or FM 105.3 on the radio dial and listen for a spell as the platform that has brought us Peyton, Eli, Ed Reed, Kevin Faulk, Herb Tyler, Jackie Smith and many, many other greats takes place starting at 7:00 p.m. It’s the All-State Sugar Bowl Prep Football Round-up, and it is where all the stars of the BCS and the Super Bowl get their start.
