Newell: Should the Dreamers stay or go?

Newell’s HOT TAKES on DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals):

  • *I'm mystified sometimes by the left's position on DACA - that we're racist and insensitive, when we're really upset by the process. It wasn't done right. It needs to go through Congress.
  • *The name-calling is over the top. Some tell me I don't know what I'm talking about because I'm a white male. My mother is a first-generation immigrant from Nicaragua, and I grew up in the Hispanic culture. She didn't speak English until she was older; and my father, a French-speaking Acadian, didn't speak English until the 4th grade. They throw these smoke bombs to cloud the issue.
  • *On the.right - the law is the law.  Do we begin to carve out exceptions? Should they, the DACA recipients, get all this extra stuff? We should vet them, make sure they meet the requirements. 800,000 people isn't some insurmountable number. We can achieve this.
  • *The pro-immigration people are throwing smokescreens.  It's never enough. They want more. The fact of the matter is that it's never enough. We can't compromise because they always want more.
  • *Hopefully, President Trump's action, by putting a proverbially gun to the head of Congress, will force the people who should be handling this to actually handle it.
