For the second week in a row, the only true top 10 showdown on the slate will take place in Lafayette. This time it's a class 4A rumble as #1 St. Thomas More hosts #3 Plaquemine

The Cougars of STM are enjoying  a bonafide renaissance, having made two straight trips to the Superdome the last two seasons, and reigning over 4A as defending state champions for the first time in school history. And they've already made quite the statement that wresting the title from their grasp will not be easy.

The Cougars have blown the doors off of each of their first two opponents this season on offense, while their defense has yet to allow even a single point to be scored. They followed up a week 1 45-0 rout of Lafayette by blanking Comeaux in Week 2 49-0.

STM is averaging 302 rushing yards per game in the early going, and they'll look to run around, over, and through another foe this week, but the competition should prove a little stiffer.

The Plaquemine Green Devils make the trip to Lafayette also sporting a 2-0 mark on the young season, having won both games handily. In Week 1, they trounced East St. John 35-13, then last week obliterated Port Allen 49-8.

Like STM, Plaquemine topped 400 yards of offense last week, and very nearly pitched a shutout on defense, allowing only a garbage-time score late in the game when the decision was all but rendered final.

In fact, the Green Devils led 35-0 after just the first quarter, sapping all hope from the Pelican faithful right from the start of the contest.

Tonight, both the Cougars and the Green Devils face their first true test of the season, and only one can emerge victorious.

And THAT'S what you need to know.

Tune into WWL at 7pm every Friday night for the Allstate Sugar Bowl Prep Football Roundup with Seth Dunlap, Allen Waddell, and Coach Lou Valdin.
