A pair of state semifinalists from a year ago square off for a game that could decide a district title before the first month of the season is even in the books.

The matchup in question comes in District 6-3A. Two teams ranked among the class’s top 3 will square off in the capital city in a battle of the unbeaten.

On one side: a perennial Baton Rouge powerhouse in the form of the U-High Cubs. University comes into this matchup having breathed pretty easily throughout their first three games. They’ve been remarkably consistent on offense, following up two 35 point performances with 34 last week. Defensively they began the year with a shutout win over Mandeville, then gave up a season-high 16 points to Southern Lab. Last week, they put the clamps on Catholic of Baton Rouge, allowing just six points to bring their per-game average to just over seven points a game.

They’re also giving up just 30 yards per game on the ground, and they’re averaging five takeaways a week. At any level of football, that’s a recipe for 3-0, and that’s exactly where the third-ranked Cubs sit.

This week though, they could be in for their first close ballgame of the season against a team who has learned to thrive in such situations.

The Saints of West Feliciana head into Baton Rouge tonight sporting a 3-0 record, but an average margin of victory of just 5 points. And their last two wins have been even closer.

The Saints followed up a 10-point Week 1 victory over East Feliciana with a four-point win over Livonia. Then last week, they cut it as close as you can get, needing a late field goal to nip Live Oak by a single point, 22-21.

So, are the second-ranked Saints battle-hardened from their heart-pounding 3-0 start? Or are they a team whose vast well of good fortune is poised to run dry? That question will get answered tonight at Richard Gill Stadium.

You can follow all the action on WWL Friday nights with the Allstate Sugar Bowl Prep Football Roundup at 7pm.
