New Orleans Saints vs Washington Redskins

Sunday November 19, 2017

Noon Kickoff Mercedes-Benz Superdome

Last Week’s Results:  Minnesota beat Washington 38-30 and New Orleans beat Buffalo 47-10.

Series History:  The Redskins lead the all-time series with the Saints holding a 17-8 mark against the Black and Gold.

Washington Redskins

Division:  NFC East

2017 Record:  4-5

Head Coach:  Jay Gruden

Defensive Coordinator:  Greg Manusky

Offensive Coordinator:  Matt Cavanaugh

Top Offensive Players:  QB Kirk Cousins, RB Chris Thompson, TE Jordan Reed, C Spencer Long.

Defensive Standouts: MLB Zach Brown, SLB Preston Smith, CB Josh Norman, NT Ziggy Hood.

Special Teams:  P Tress Way, K Nick Rose, KR Chris Thompson, PR Jamison Crowder

What they do well:  Washington is ranked 9th in passing yards in the NFL.  And the Redskins have the 13th best rush defense in the NFL.

Where they are weak:  Stats wise the Skins are ranked 26th in the NFL in scoring defense allowing 25.8 points per game.  And Washington has a defense that is fairly easy to convert third downs on.  The Skins allow on average their foes to convert 43% percent of the time on 3rd down.

Saints Offense versus Redskins Defense

Let’s face it the Saints are as sound overall on offense as they have ever been.  SURE some of you don’t have or either don’t take the time to really look into what this Saints offense has done and continues to try and do each week on a consistent basis.

The Saints are ranked in the Top 10 of every team offensive stat in the NFL.  And teams are scratching their heads and their you know what trying to figure out what this team is going to do.

And folks it is not rocket science.  The Saints being able to run the ball makes their offense as potent and dangerous as it has ever been.  Listen to me, when the scoreboard reads all zeros Sunday afternoon about 3PM and New Orleans has about the same number of rushing attempts as they do passing attempts then the Redskins will be sent home with a 4-6 record.  And it won’t be close.

The Black and Gold O-Line is slowly morphing into one of the best in team history and they have set the table for what could be a special run.  Nothing is won, handed out or given away in November.  But those Super Sunday contenders start to pull away from the others.

Redskins Offense versus Saints Defense

The Saints Defense is playing well right now.  Are they great?  Not by any stretch.  But they have played great defense at times including during the last seven games allowing only 14.3 points per game to their opponents.

Different players are stepping up each week, and this week the Saints pass rush will be tested.  As good as the Saints have played if they don’t put heat on Skins QB Kirk Cousins it could spell trouble.

Washington has a top 10 passing offense and the DB’s should get plenty of shots to make plays in the secondary.  But the greatest DB will tell you that a pass rush is crucial when facing a team that can throw the ball with success.

The Big Chief says New Orleans

Like in every other game turnovers will be huge.  The Skins are 1-3 in games in which they have not forced more turnovers than their opponent versus a 3-1 mark when they have forced more than their foes.

Washington figures to try and rush the football so the Saints can’t just line up and try and tee off on QB Kirk Cousins.  However the Black and Gold have been a stout defense overall the last seven games including their rush defense.

The Saints have held opponents to less than 100 rushing yards in four of their last seven games.  And the Saints have allowed their foes just a shade over 14 points on average during their seven game tear.

The Redskins are a very physical team and basically Washington knows that if they are going to have any shot at the post season it must be in the form of a Wild Card.  Simply put the game is not played on paper and by what if’s.

But New Orleans is the better team.  And if the Saints are for real then this is a game they should win.  I’ll take the Saints at home and go New Orleans 27 Washington 13
