There's low, and then there are the allegations against these parents.  This is a new depth of low.

Police in Florida says a pair of parents told their own child that he had brain cancer and was going to die.  Investigators say it was part of a scam to try and bilk people out of money.

A news release from the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office says investigators say the Fort Walton Beach couple told people the child had terminal brain cancer in a phony, yet successful attempt to get donations.

"The 13 year old has spent the last eight months believing he is going to die from brain cancer, but the OCSO’s investigation revealed his medical records prove no brain tumors exist," according to the sheriff's office.  "34-year old Ginny Irovando Long and her husband, 47-year old Robert Edward Long, have been charged by the OCSO with one count of child abuse and nine counts of fraud."

The Associated Press reports that anyone who donated to the couple will get a refund from GoFundMe.

GoFundMe spokesman Bobby Whithorne emailed a statement saying the company also has banned 34-year-old Ginny Long and 47-year-old Robert Long from the crowdfunding site.

Detectives say the Longs also set up a T-shirt fundraiser at the boy's school and shared the bogus cancer diagnosis on Facebook accounts.

Sheriff's officials didn't say how much money they raised through GoFundMe.

I think the saddest part of this is that investigators say the child believed he was going to day any day.  His own parents allegedly convinced him he only had days to live.

How in the world could anyone do that to a child?
