A week ago at this time some fans were concerned about the LSU Tigers. A week later the Tigers have somewhat righted the ship. LSU is on a three game win streak and will look to keep their current momentum rolling this weekend in SEC play.
“What a difference having Hunter Newman back makes. When you can put the ball in his hands with a lead you feel pretty good. Hunter got off to a slow start but quickly gained his composure and was solid for us,” said LSU Coach Paul Mainieri.
LSU Coach joined Bobby, Deuce and Deke on Sports Talk to review the Tigers win over the Rajun Cajuns. And Coach previewed the Tigers upcoming SEC series against the Ole Miss Rebels.
Coach Mainiei said that winning the close one run games has been the difference the last 10 days for the Tigers. LSU had lost close games to Florida and Texas A&M in previous weeks. But the Tigers bounced back with back to back wins over Arkansas on the road followed by a 3-2 win over Louisiana Lafayette.
LSU enters their series with the Rebels with a 23-11 overall record including a 7-5 mark in SEC play. Coach Mainieri says that the Rebels are playing well right now. “They (Ole Miss) have a tremendous pitching staff and Coach Mike Bianco has a very good team. Ole Miss scored 20 runs in a weekend sweep over Alabama. Ole Miss is coming here playing with a lot of confidence. We are going to have to play our best to win.” Ole Miss is 21-12 overall and 6-6 in league play.
Coach Mainieri said that making some changes to the pitching rotation has proved to be a good move. “We moved some midweek pitchers to the weekend and the players have responded well. If you have five or six guys you can count on coming out of the bull pen that’s all you can really ask for.
Mainieri said that his team is no finished product as he feels like the Tigers are a work in progress but Mainieri like what he sees right now. “I think the three freshmen coming out of the bullpen are doing just fine. They have stepped up.”
