Since the arrival of Sean Payton in 2006 the New Orleans Saints Offense has been ranked among the top five or higher offensive units in the NFL.  The Saints Defense has been ranked among the worst.

So where is the balance?  In 2013 the Saints Offense and Defense were both ranked in the top 10.  And that is the goal again in 2017.  “Anytime you can have back to back days of practice in which you think you have won the day that is a sign of improvement,” said the Cajun Cannon Bobby Hebert.

Bobby was very pleased with the play of the Saints Defense for the second straight day.  “I would agree, “said Deuce McAllister.  “The Saints worked on some runs and the defense I thought did well.”

Deuce pointed out Linebacker A.J. Klien.  On one play Klien shot through a gap and made a clean tackle on Saints Running Back Mark Ingram. Both of our resident pros were in agreement that the Saints Defense has made strides during training camp.

Some of top defensive plays

  • DE Cam Jordan had a sack and batted down a pass.
  • CB Ken Crawly picked off a pass
  • LB A.J. Klien ‘had a four yard tackle for a loss on RB Mark Ingram
  • LB Hau’oli Kikaha had a sack on Chase Daniel
  • DE Alex Okafor also took down Drew Brees on a sack
  • CB Sterling Moore was active in Red Zone work as the defensive back broke up a pass preventing a TD from the Saints Offense

Unfortunately for the Saints Offense the issues with snapping the football continue to be a problem.  On every day of camp thru the first seven days at least one Center to QB exchange has featured a bad/high snap.

“Today was actually the first day we saw bad snaps from the Long Snappers.  So now it looks like both on offense and special teams that more focus has to be on snapping the football,” McAllister said.

Bobby pointed out veteran RB Adrian Peterson.  “He (Peterson) don’t look like no old player.  Adrian Peterson looks like he’s in his 20’s running the football.  He had a few nice runs out there today.”

Some offensive highlights were

  • QB Chase Daniel to WR Tommy Lee Lewis on a fade route for a 20 yard TD
  • RB Adrian Peterson scored on a six yard run during Red Zone work
  • QB Drew Brees hit RB Adrian Peterson on wheel route for about a 15 yard TD
  • RB Alvin Kamara hauled in a TD pass from Drew Brees
  • QB Drew Brees hit WR Ted Ginn Jr. on a 20 yard TD back shoulder score
  • Drew Brees hit WR Corey Fuller on a 12 yard out route and then on a 60 yard bomb for a score
  • WR Travin Dural had a 20 yard reception from back-up QB Garrett Grayson

“The offense had some big plays today.  I thought all the QB’s had some nice throws during the Red Zone portion of practice.  I think we are so use to how good the Saints Offense is that we get a little over excited when the defense stands out,” Bobby said.

Coach Sean Payton announced that the Black and Gold will hold a primetime practice on Sunday Night at Tulane University.  The Saints will practice at 7PM at Yulman Stadium on the Tulane Campus.  The practice is free and open to the public with the gates to Yulman Stadium opening up at 6PM.

The Saints get back to work tomorrow with their 8th practice of training camp.  Friday’s Practice is open to the public weather permitting.
