Jim Mora, the first head coach to take the Saints to the NFL postseason, has gotten a few first-hand looks at the 2017 model of the team he used to helm, and he joined WWL Radio Tuesday night to discuss what he's expecting from the black and gold.

Mora says he's optimistic. "I was impressed. I don't know," Mora said. "I've got a good feeling about the Saints this year. I just liked the way the practice went. I thought Sean [Payton] was upbeat in his press conferences after the practices. I think they've got some good young players on defense."

Mora then elaborated on his thoughts on the defensive side of the ball. "Obviously, offensively they're pretty darn good already," Mora said. "I think where they needed to get better was on defense. I was impressed with some of their guys. I came away after watching the first two days of practice with a pretty good feeling about the team."

He then focused the conversation on the Saints' pass rush. "That's the key in the NFL," Mora said. "They don't have one guy on the defensive line that's gonna create havoc as far as getting after the quarterback, but I think if they take their group overall, they have a chance to put pressure on the quarterback.

"I'm not saying that I'm gonna predict that they'll have a great defense," Mora said. "I think it's a little bit of a wait and see. I just think that overall, they're gonna be better."

The Who Dat Nation will get their first live-game look at the 2017 Saints this Thursday night when they travel to Cleveland for preseason contest #1 against the Browns. Kickoff is at 7pm. We'll have full coverage on WWL starting at 3pm. You can hear the full audio of Mora's appearance on WWL by clicking the podcast below.
