The LSU fighting Tigers are in Omaha getting last minute preparations in for their opening CWS Game against Florida State.  The Tigers will send Ace Pitcher Alex Lange to the mound to battle the Noles.

But what was unknown was who Coach Paul Mainieri would start in game two for the Tigers.  “I wanted to start Eric Walker and use Jared Poche out of the Bullpen.  But we may have to change that now,” Mainieri said.

Eric Walker became one of the nation’s top Freshmen Pitchers this season with LSU.  Earlier this week the Tigers had a scrimmage game to prepare for the CWS.  Walker threw in that scrimmage but Mainieri said that his talented freshman experienced soreness in his forearm and now the possibility of Walker starting game two is up in the air.

“I wanted to start Eric (Walker) and then use Jared (Poche) out of the Bullpen.  We’re going to go out early in the morning and see how Eric throws to get a better feel how he’s looking.”  LSU will face either Oregon State or Cal State.

Coach Mainieri visited with Deuce and Deke on Sports Talk Friday Afternoon.  Mainieri talked about the excitement that goes along with going to the College World Series.  “It never gets old.  It’s awesome to be here.  You want your team to enjoy themselves.  But obviously it is a lot more fun when you win here.”

LSU has been in Omaha for a few days and now it’s getting closer to game time.  LSU takes on Florida State Saturday Night on WWL Radio.  Coach Mainieri said that FSU is a solid team in all phases of the game.

“They have a bunch of Home Run hitters.  That is a challenge guarding against the long ball.  Luckliy here it is more difficult to hit Home Runs as it is such a deep park.  They (Florida State) really fought their way through the season and played as good as anyone late in the season.  We’re going to have to play our best against them.”

Mainieri went on to talk about his first trip as a coach to the CWS when he led Notre Dame to Omaha back in 2002.  Coach thinks his team is ready to play.  “I thought we had a very good week of practice and I think the players are focused and looking forward to the challenge of playing Florida State.”
