Summer heat dangerous for pets in cars

With the summer heat cranking up, there is a renewed warning about leaving pets in hot vehicles.

Officials the Humane Society of Louisiana see this every year and they're pleading for it to stop.

Why would someone leave their dog in a steamy hot car?

"People run in, thinking it will be a 5 minute shopping spree, it turns into 10 minutes or 15 minutes and they've forgotten about the dog in the car,'' says Executive Director Jeff Dorson.

Dorson says on an 85 degree day, the temperature inside a car, even with the window opened slightly, can reach 102 degrees within minutes.

He says the consequences can be devastating.

''Death or irreversible damage can occur by leaving a pet in a car for just minutes,'' Dorson said.

He urges anyone who sees a pet in distress to look for the owner or call 9-11.
