Officials say Helen Cox High School in Harvey was never placed on lockdown this morning, despite earlier reports to the contrary.

Parents who were picking up their kids this morning, told WWL-TV that a student from the school threatened to shoot the school.  Those parents also said the principal is allowing parents to come and pick up their children as a precaution.

"It was incorrectly reported this morning that Helen Cox High School is on lock down due to a threat of violence. The school was never on lock down and is following its regular schedule," Executive Director of Communications Elizabeth A. Branley said. "A threat was reported to the school administration on Tuesday who immediately contacted the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. The detectives investigated and found no credible threat."

She says that the student in question will face disciplinary action in accordance with board policy.

"The District takes every threat seriously and works closely with our law enforcement communities to ensure that our students and staff are safe in our schools."

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Lieutenant Jason Rivarde said, "Late last night, we received a Crimestoppers tip that referenced a possible threat to the school.  We believe that the tip was in reference to the same student who had already been investigated and determined to not pose a credible threat.  Out of an abundance of caution, we sent additional investigators to the school this morning to ensure there was no threat and that all possible leads had been investigated."

He added that they take any threat against our schools seriously, and will investigate all to the fullest.

"The student was charged with a juvenile status offense, and released to his parents.  There were no criminal charges filed, and none are expected."

Rivarde says it all started when the school resource officer at Cox received information that a student had made a threatening gesture to another student and possibly made a threat against the school.
