LSU to have quarterback competition

LSU Football Coach Ed Orgeron says Quarterback Danny Etling is nearly 100% after undergoing back surgery, but he’s not ready to name him the starter for the season opener against BYU. Orgeron says he wants the other QBs compete for the job and get an evaluation from new offensive coordinator Matt Canada.

"We're going to make a quarterback competition and I want every quarterback to have a chance to show you his different skill sets and see if you like em," Orgeron said.

Incoming freshmen Lowell Narcisse, sophomore Justin McMillan, redshirt freshman Lindsey Scott and true freshman Myles Brennan will compete against Etling for starting Q-B. Orgeron says if the season started today, Etling would be the starter.

At SEC Media Day, Orgeron was asked about Florida naming the LSU game on October 7th as its homecoming game.

"People are going to do what they are going to do and Florida is a great rivalry for us and we respect them. Anytime we go into the Swamp it's going to be a battle," Orgeron said.

LSU lost a lot of talent off of last year’s defense. Orgeron says younger players have to step up, including former North Caddo star Devin White, who could be a starter at middle linebacker.

"He's an outstanding player, he's matured. In fact, he called me about a month ago, he said coach will help me be a leader on this football team and let me know what I need to do."
