Cantrell defeated former New Orleans Municipal Court Judge Desiree Charbonnet.

Cantrell's grass-roots, populist campaign proved more effective than Charbonnet's more polished-appearing effort.

Early in the runoff, the Charbonnet campaign revealed Cantrell has spent thousands of dollars for personal items on her city council-issued credit card. Cantrell countered that her office kept a thorough accounting of her purchases and repaid the charges with either personal or campaign money. Although one of those repayments, to the tune of thousands of dollars, was made after Cantrell qualified to run for mayor, most voters did not seem to consider the accusations severe enough to get them to change their votes. Most polls showed Cantrell maintaining a double-digit lead over her opponent up until election day.

Cantrell takes office in May.
