Jury selection started today for the man accused of killing New Orleans police officer Daryle Holloway in 2015.  Travis Boys has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Boys is accused of shooting Officer Holloway as Holloway was taking him to jail. Boys' lawyers plan to introduce evidence that he suffers from schizophrenia and has a low IQ.

Legal analyst Dane Ciolino says this defense can be difficult.

''You know a lot of people are very suspicious of the 'not guilty by reason of insanity' plea, and think that it's just an easy way for someone to fake their way out of a first degree murder conviction,'' said Ciolino.

Ciolino says the Louisiana standard is a very strict.

''You're insane only if you cannot appreciate the difference between right and wrong, and the Louisiana standard is a very strict standard for criminal insanity,'' Ciolino said.

If convicted, Boys is facing life in prison. The prosecution decided not to seek the death penalty.
