The Jefferson Parish Council today took up a package of new laws dealing with short term rentals, Airbnb and other similar lodging.

The ordinances include banning people from renting homes, condos and apartments in all residential neighborhoods.

They also require property owners to get licenses and permits along with paying the  same taxes as hotels.

Speakers at the public hearing expressed concerns about the impact of Airbnb and other services on neighborhoods and on existing hotels.

Others argued that this new form of rentals should not be treated like more traditional lodging.

Short term rentals would be allowed in commercial and mixed use zones with the proper licenses and permits, taxes and other rules and restrictions.
