The news came down Monday and it was not good.  “I’m still depressed.  Losing any player is difficult for a team to overcome in many ways.  But when you lose one of your best players it magnifies the problem to a greater level of things to overcome.”  Those were the words spoken by the Saints' all-time leading rusher, the beloved #26, Deuce McAllister.

Deuce was talking about the latest news on Saints Defensive Tackle Nick Fairley.  Monday the Saints announced that the veteran DT was placed on the team’s reserve/non-football illness list.  Fairley learned a few month ago that a Red Flag was raised on his heart after a health examine.

“We are talking about the Saints best interior Defensive Lineman and a seasoned professional.  I do believe in next man up.  But you just don’t replace a guy like Nick Fairley that easily,” McAllister said.

Nick is coming off his best season as a pro with the 2016 season being a year that was reminiscent to Fairley’s days at Auburn when he was named the SEC Defensive Player of the year in 2010.

Fairley signed a one-year deal with the Saints in the spring of 2016.  The Saints took a play well and we will pay you later approach with Nick and it panned out well for both parties.  Fairley had a career season with 6.5 sacks in his first season with the Black and Gold.

After his solid season the Saints inked Fairley to a four-year 28 million dollar contract.  But now the future of Fairley with the Saints and his future in the NFL are all on hold with Nick being shelved for the 2017 season.

“The Saints have some good players in the mix at defensive tackle.  But I’m sure they are also looking around to see which players may be available or even some that might become available and if the Saints might try and add some more players at the position.”
