The Coast Guard has responded to an oil spill in the Mississippi River, near Garyville, about 40 miles upriver from New Orleans.

Officials with the Guard received a report early Sunday morning that a potential maximum of 4,200 gallons of fuel oil was released into the lower Mississippi River.

The report came from the National Response Center shortly after midnight, saying that a potential maximum of 4,200 gallons of fuel oil was released into the river.

An oil spill response organization and Coast Guard teams are on site, assessing the impact.

The river has not been closed, and the cause of the spill is still under investigation.
