The decorative lights that outline the top of the Crescent City Connection's steel cantilever have been turned off since the weekend. Louisiana highway officials say with the bridge tolls suspended, they can't pay the $60,000 it takes to keep the lights powered and maintained throughout the year.
But if it takes tolls to do that in New Orleans, who is paying for the lights on other bridges in Louisiana that have no tolls? The bridge that carries the I-10 over the Mississippi River bridge in Baton Rouge is not a toll bridge, but it has a similar string of lights atop its structure.
Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts is seeking answers. He's requested an explanation from the Department of Transportation and Development.
The Crescent City Connection bridge toll issue comes up for a vote May 4.
