What should the new name be for the Hornets?
When the NBA announced the sale of the Hornets to Tom Benson, he made it clear that one of the first things on his agenda is finding a fitting new name for his basketball team.
"I would like all you to help me with this. We want to change the name from Hornets to something that means New Orleans and Louisiana. The Hornets don't mean anything."
Benson knows one way to endear this club to the region is to find a name that means something to the people in this state.
The first names I started to think about were all animals/creatures.
The New Orleans Gators: Seems like a pretty obvious choice to me. I can see one of two logos... An alligator dribbling a basketball OR one with its mouth wide open and the ball inside of it.
The New Orleans King Snakes / Serpents: Not sure if either name really rolls of the tongue (haha) but there are countless amounts of cool and intimidating logos you could come up with.
The New Orleans Werewolves: I grew up in New Jersey, and my favorite franchise name of all time is in the NHL. The New Jersey Devils got their moniker from the legend of a creature that lives in the Pine Barrens of Southern NJ. I even remember being asked to draw a picture of what I thought the Jersey Devil looked like as a kid in school. Imagine kids drawing a devil as a project for class!?! That would NEVER happen in our politically correct, uptight, no fun, society nowadays.
Anyway…I asked around about any local legends and was told about the “loup-garou” which is French for werewolf. Pretty cool, the only issue is that Minnesota has the Timberwolves already.
The New Orleans Swamp Monsters: Once again I'm not sure if the name really rolls of the tongue; I just know an awesome logo could be created.
OK, let's move on to a different genre before I get completely delusional.
Some other names I thought of…
The New Orleans Knights
The New Orleans Marauders
The New Orleans Nightmare
All right, it's your turn. Chime in below with some of your suggestions.
