What You Need To Know – Week 10

Here’s what you need to know for week 10 of the prep football season.

For the biggest game of the night, let’s head over to New Iberia, where the District 3-5A is up for grabs between a perennial power and a surprise contender for the crown.

The Acadiana Wrecking Rams are 8-1 on the season, and they’ve won seven straight after dropping a week 2 contest to 4A’s #1 team the Neville Tigers. The Rams and their veer attack are unbeaten in district play at 6-0, and they’ve got statement wins this year over both of last year’s 5A championship teams, Barbe and Rummel. A win tonight would give the Rams their first outright district championship in recent memory, but to get there, they’ll have to get past a team no-one saw coming.

The New Iberia Yellow Jackets moved into District 3 as part of the 2013 redistricting by the LHSAA. Like Acadiana, they lost in week 2, in their case by 14 to Teurlings, and also like the Rams, they’ve reeled off seven straight victories, including a win over preseason #1 Barbe. In the state polls, New Iberia trails Acadiana by 5 spots, at #8 compared to the Rams’ position at #3. But in the latest unofficial power ratings, the ranking that will eventually determine playoff-seeding, the Yellow Jackets sit only two spots behind the Rams. Acadiana is #2 with New Iberia at #4. So this game could determine the #1 seed in the 5A playoffs in addition to giving one of these teams an undefeated record in district and the outright district championship. It really doesn’t get any bigger than that.

And there are other big-time matchups across the state tonight.

In Gonzales, #9 East Ascension hosts #10 Catholic of Baton Rouge with the District 5-5A title on the line. In District 9-3A, a pair of teams sporting 3-0 district records square off for that district title as the #9 Patterson Lumberjacks host the Franklin Hornets.

And in our prep football roundup game of the week, the District 7-5A is the prize when East St. John takes on Destrehan. The Destrehan edition of the Wildcats has an average margin of victory of nearly 38 points. Quarterback Donovan Isom has turned heads, tossing 31 touchdowns and only one interception. And of course the only loss for the 8-1 Wildcats was that forfeiture to South Lafourche after some of the team’s assistant coaches were caught sneaking peeks at the Tarpon playbook online. Meanwhile the East St. John Wildcats are unbeaten in district play at 6-0 and squeaked by Destrehan when they last met a year ago 35-34.

Deke Bellavia and Allen Waddell will bear witness to this showdown of matching mascots in the final week before a historic postseason begins.

And THAT’S what you need to know.
