70th Anniversary of D-Day June 6-7
National WWII Museum

The National WWII Museum commemorates the 70th Anniversary of D-Day in France and in New Orleans with the help of the men who took part in the historic invasion on June 6, 1944. In Normandy, a Museum delegation will escort ten veterans to the international observations on Friday, June 6. Back home on the Museum’s New Orleans campus, D-Day veterans will assemble for a series of events both on that day and Saturday, June 7. Friends and family, civilians and service men and women will get a chance to say “thank you” for the veterans’ fight to preserve freedom.

Kenner Kick Off Main Street Celebration June 6
Rivertown at the south end of Williams Blvd in Kenner

Free live music and a huge block party featuring the merchants in Rivertown will highlight a special Kick Off Main Street celebration beginning at 6:30 p.m. on June 6, Kenner Mayor Michael Yenni announced.
Kenner was notified in March that it had been designated by state officials as the 36th Main Street Community in the state. The June 6 block party includes Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne, who will make the official announcement to Yenni and members of the Kenner City Council. Two different bands, The Yat Pack and Band Camp, will perform during the three-hour block party and food and craft vendors will line the street from the Illinois Central railroad tracks to the south end of Williams Boulevard so everyone involved can get a feel for the unique atmosphere that only the Rivertown historic district can offer.

French Market’s 28th Annual Creole Tomato Festival June 7-8
French Market in the Vieux Carre

This two-day festival goes from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday June 7 and Sunday June 8. It is free and open to the public with activities for all ages. Festival grounds are the historic French Market, covering approximately 3 blocks between Dumaine Street and Barracks Street in the lower French Quarter Two live music stages will feature local music, from jazz to funk to Cajun and R&B musical acts. 16 festival food booths will feature Creole tomato dishes of all kinds, from crabmeat stuffed tomatoes to fried green tomatoes to Creole tomato and basil filled crepes. Plus: People strolling the grounds in tomato costumes and handing out tomato shaped fans; Creole tomato eating contests;  bite size tomato samples so you can taste a fresh one yourself and decide if you want to purchase a box to take home! There will be several local produce vendors selling the ripest Creole tomatoes that you can find…this weekend marks the official “opening” of the Creole tomato season!

NOLA Time Fest II 2014 June 7

Celebrating the next 50 years of DOCTOR WHO, Krewe du Who (KdW) and The Consortium of Genius (C.O.G.) present NOLA Time Fest II 2014, a one-day sci-fi convention. With over 600 Whovians in attendance, our first year celebration rocked the Time Vortex. This year NOLA Time Fest II 2014 promises to bring even more Whovians together. Seize The Moment at this all ages event featuring Krewe du Who TARDISes, Daleks and the Face of Boe!

Dinner and a ZOOvie June 8
Audubon Zoo

Dinner and a ZOOvie continues with the first of four nights on June 8, 2014 on the grounds of Audubon Zoo. Doors will open at 7:00 pm and the movie will start at about 8:00 pm. Before the movie, we'll have a DJ playing some tunes. Come with your chairs and blankets, food/drink and catch a fun family movie inside the Zoo! All shows are $5 per person (children under two years of age are free) and you’re welcome to bring chairs and blankets. No glass containers, open candles or pets, please. All films will be shown outside at the Capital One Stage and Field inside Audubon Zoo. Please note: Animal exhibits will not be open.

St. Charles Crawfish Cook-Off June 8
Jerusalem Shrine Center, 1940 Ormond Blvd in Destrehan
A festival about community, bringing together in St. Charles Parish, hosted by the Ormond Civic Association and Shriners. The event will feature live bands, activities for kids, celebrity judges, and of course crawfish!
