Tug pilot killed after crane hits bridge

A man died early this morning when a crane fell on the wheelhouse of his tugboat.

It happened on the Industrial Canal.

The captain of the tugboat was killed after the crane he was pushing slammed into the Florida Avenue Bridge and then collapsed onto the tug.

The Coast Guard says the bridge was raised above the height requested, but the crane arm still struck the structure.

An investigation continues.

The bridge and the canal have since reopened.
