Tropical Storm Isaac updates for Plaquemines Parish

9-4 4pm

BELLE CHASSE -- Today, Plaquemines Parish Emergency Operations Center and Parish President Billy Nungesser provide the following updates:

Plaquemines Parish Evacuees Moving to Shelters Closer to Home

Plaquemines Parish evacuees are being transported from a shelter located in Shreveport, La. to American Red Cross shelters closer to home in Jefferson Parish and St. Bernard Parish.

Plaquemines Parish Community Action Agency is providing shuttle service for evacuees planning to stay in the Jefferson Parish or St. Bernard Parish shelters.

MREs and Water Continue to be Available at Multiple Locations
MRE’s and water continue to be available to Plaquemines Parish residents.

Today is the final day that Plaquemines Parish residents can obtain water and MREs from Idlewidle at 11422 Hwy 23 in Belle Chasse, the Port Sulphur Fire Station and the Boothville-Venice Fire Station.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, September 4, residents can pick up water, ice and MRE’s at the Port Sulphur Community Center at 278 Civic Drive.

Thursday morning, September 6, MREs and water are available for pick up at Boothville-Venice Elementary School at 1 Oiler Drive.

Thursday evening, MREs and water may be obtained at the Percy Griffin Community Center at 15577 Hwy 15 in Davant.

Belle Chasse Primary School, Belle Chasse Middle School, and Belle Chasse High School will reopen on Tuesday, September 4th.

Phoenix High School, the Plaquemines Parish Learning Center, South Plaquemines Elementary School, South Plaquemines High School, and Boothville Elementary School will reopen as soon as residents are allowed to return to their respective communities.

If any changes or updates are made, we will notify you as soon as possible.

Belle Chasse Primary School, Belle Chasse Middle School, and Belle Chasse High School will reopen on Tuesday, September 4th.

Phoenix High School, the Plaquemines Parish Learning Center, South Plaquemines Elementary School, South Plaquemines High School, and Boothville Elementary School will reopen as soon as residents are allowed to return to their respective communities.

Belle Chasse - Water and MRE’s can be picked up at the Port Sulphur Fire Station at 114 Civic Dr., the Boothville-Venice Fire Station at 42661 Hwy 23, and Idlewild at 11504 Hwy 23 in Belle Chasse south of Captain Larry’s. Cypress Cove Marina in Venice has fuel and diesel for sale. Fire stations in south Plaquemines have EMS and emergency personnel on st

and-by for emergency situations. Those locations include the Port Sulphur Fire Station, Buras Fire Station, the Boothville-Venice Fire Station, and the Pointe-la-Hache Fire Station on the east bank. If your phone works and you need medical help please call 911.

Residents wishing to leave south Plaquemines Parish on the west bank can do so today, September 1, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. They will be convoyed out by local and state police on the Mississippi River levee. Residents wishing to do so should take Hwy 23 north to the St. Jude hump and turn right to Hwy 11/River Rd. Residents will not be allowed to return to south Plaquemines Parish until the evacuation orders are lifted.
Every effort is being made to make the south end of the parish available to business owners and residents.

Plaquemines Parish Status Update – August 31, 2012

Access is available to the following areas: Hwy. 23 to Philips66; below that point Hwy 23 is flooded and is impassable. Efforts are underway to pump out this flood water and re-open the road as soon as possible.

Currently there is no access to the following areas: Entire east bank and any areas south of Phillips66 on the west bank.

Entergy is working to restore power within the parish. Updates will follow as they become available.

Presently, water, Ice and MRE's will be available at the following location and times:

• Sept 2, 12:00 Noon - 11504 Hwy 23 Belle Chasse – Idewild Estates – while supplies last

• Other locations to be announced as they become known

Plaquemines Parish officials are continuing to work with the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office, Plaquemines Parish Fire Department, the Governor’s Office, GOHSEP, the Army Corps of Engineers, Coast Guard, the National Guard, the US Air Force, LA State Troopers, and Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, to assure a speedy return to residents of Plaquemines parish.


Residents who live north of the Phillips66 Refinery formally Conocophillips refinery can return home. There are NO UTILITIES in this area nor is there a timeline for when they will return, but the threat of flooding has passed. The communities of Ironton, Myrtle Grove, Pointe Celeste, and West point-a-la-Hache are still facing the challenge of flood waters. These areas are still under evacuation orders. Because of the water on the Hwy 23 in the areas listed above, communities south of West Point-a-la-Hache are still under evacuation orders. The east bank is still under an evacuation because of flooding.


There is a boil water advisory in affect for Port Sulphur and East Pointe-la-Hache.

A mandatory evacuation has been ordered from the Oakville Flood Gate on Hwy 23 to Venice. Residents are urged to evacuate this area.

A shelter will open at the YMCA in Belle Chasse located at 8101 Hwy 23. The shelter will open at noon today.

Hwy 23 is open to traffic. If you can get to the shelter on your own please do so. If there is water on your street and you feel unsafe traveling on your own please call 911 and a sheriff's deputy will transport you and your family to the shelter safely.

Water will start rising this afternoon and could exceed the height of the levees. The new models are a result of the storm continuing to push water for long periods of time. Please heed warnings and evacuate as soon as possible or call 911 for assistance.

School buses will be going through neighborhoods to pick up people.

Statement from Plaquemines Parish:

"Plaquemines Parish officials are coordinating with officials from St. Bernard Parish, GOHSEP, the National Guard, Coast Guard, State Police, the US Army Corps of Engineers and other state agencies to rescue stranded residents on the east bank of Plaquemines Parish from Braithwaite to Whiteditch. The back levee along that area has been overflowing with water since earlier today. Up to 12 feet of water has filled that community from the back levee to the Mississippi River.

Rescue efforts are now in progress. Local residents are rescuing other residents at this time. Our main concern now is to successfully rescue all residents from the affected area. More information will be sent out as it becomes available. "

The Empire Flood Gate will close at 10:00 p.m. tonight. No vessel traffic will be aloud through after that.
 

Belle Chasse - Effective tonight, August 27, 2012, at 8pm, the Doullut Canal Bridge on Hwy 11 in Empire, LA will be locked in the down position and closed to all boat traffic. In addition, the flood gate on Hwy 39 at the Plaquemines Parish/St. Bernard Parish line will also be closed at 8pm.

The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office will provide an alternative emergency access lane at that location for emergency vehicles, and local residents with ID. Also only local residents will be allowed below the Oakville Flood Gate on Hwy 23.


 

  • Mandatory evacuation for East Bank of Parish; mandatory evacuation for lower end of west bank ( ronton to Venice is being called at noon)
  • Belle Chasse - At 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 26, 2012, Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser Declared a State of Emergency because of the threat of Tropical Storm Isaac. Officials are working with GOHSEP, the Corps of Engineers, and local area leaders to prepare for the storm.
  • On the eastbank parish officials are lining newly raised levees with visqueen to ensure that areas with exposed dirt are protected. On the westbank additional Hesco baskets are being added to close gaps in low lying area of Hwy 23. Also, sandbags are being added to levees which are part of the hurricane protection system in Pointe-a-la-Hache.
  • Residents are urged to put a plan into place and to stay tuned to local news stations for the latest updates. Also residents can go to www.plaqueminesparish.com or www.facebook.com/plaqueminesgovernment for updates. Those who need transportation assistance, if the need to evacuate arises, should call 504-274-2470 to pre-register.
