Thibodaux considering saggy pants ban

The City Council in Thibodaux is expected to vote on the saggy pants ban tonight after they hear comments from the public. The Lafourche Parish Council passed a similar ordinance in 2007, but it doesn't apply in Thibodaux.

Mayor Tommy Eschete says the ordinance has a lot of support, but the decision is ultimately up to the Council.

"I think most people look at this as something that has its own culture," Eschete says. "Some people find it offensive, some not so. But bottom line is if the Council adopts the ordinance, the Thibodaux Police Department will uphold the law."

Violators would get a $50 fine for a first offense, $100 for a second offense and $100 and 16 hours of community service for a third offense.

Eschete says they've gotten a lot of complaints from people who are offended by low hanging pants when underwear is exposed in public. He says if the ordinance passes, police won't specifically go out looking for people to cite for the offense.
"But if we get a complaint then we are going to enforce the law to the best of our ability," Eschete says.
