The good, bad and ugly from LSU's 9-6 overtime win in 'Bama
Jeff Palermo Reporting
THE GOOD
Claiborne and Reid
There were great defensive backs all over the field on Saturday night, but cornerback Morris Claiborne and Eric Reid separated themselves by intercepting passes in the final 17 minutes of the game. Claiborne's interception set up a game-tying field goal, while Reid's athletic INT ended a potential scoring opportunity for the Crimson Tide.
Alleman and Wing
LSU had the special teams edge going into the game and it's what propelled the Tigers to a victory. Alleman's three field goals were the only points LSU scored and it didn't matter that Alabama coach Nick Saban tried to freeze him on two separate attempts. Punter Brad Wing hit one off the side of his foot for 22 yards, but all of his other attempts were on the money. His 73-yard punt in the 4th quarter was one of the biggest plays of the game.
Jefferson and Ford
Jordan Jefferson doesn't have a big fan club, but it was his calming influence and steady hand that kept the Tigers in the game. Jefferson's 34-yard pass towards the end of the second quarter, set up Alleman's first field goal. He also rushed for 43 yards.
Yards were tough to come by for Spencer Ware, so Michael Ford's ability to run outside of the tackles turned out to be LSU's only real offensive threat. Ford rushed for 72 yards on eleven carries and almost scored the winning touchdown. Ford got most of his yards on option plays.
LSU fans and myself have complained about the Tigers running the option with Jefferson. But it was the only play that was working on Saturday.
Baker and the LSU defense
Alabama's Trent Richardson is the best running back in the country, but the Tigers kept him in check on Saturday night. Richardson rushed for 89 yards on 23 carries, but never had that run to break the game open. LSU could have done a better job covering Richardson out of the backfield. He had five catches for 80 yards. LSU linebacker Ryan Baker led the Tigers with eight tackles.
THE BAD
Jarrett Lee
It was a tough night for quarterback Jarrett Lee who threw two interceptions, as he looked like the redshirt freshman who threw four picks against Alabama in 2008. Lee has thrown 21 career interceptions, seven of them have come against the Crimson Tide.
It will be interesting to see how the coaching staff uses Lee the rest of the way. Will he still start is one question? I'm sure he'll continue to rotate with Jefferson and they have two winnable games to figure it out, before they end the regular season against Arkansas.
Alabama Field Goal Kicking
I'm sure Alabama Coach Nick Saban is scouring the country for the best high school field goal kicker in the nation today. That was just a brutal performance by Alabama's field goal kickers. Cade Foster missed three field goals, two of them were 50 yards or longer. But the 44-yarder he missed in the first quarter set the tone. Jeremy Shelley also had a 49-yard field goal blocked.
Alabama Coaching
Alabama got too cute, when this was a meat and potatoes game. The trick play that resulted in Reid's interception was a bad play call. Alabama had it 1st-and-10 at the LSU 28 and Richardson just ran it for 24 yards on the previous play. The Crimson Tide should have just kept the ball in Richardson's hands, instead they call for wide receiver Marquis Maze to throw a pass which was intercepted.
Also, Maze was walking around on a bad ankle. They had him in to field a punt a few plays later, but he couldn't move and Wing ended up hitting a 73-yard punt.
The 12-men in a huddle penalty in overtime, helped take Alabama out field goal range. That type of penalty can't happen in that situation.
THE UGLY
Tyrann Mathieu's holding penalty
Tyrann Mathieu's holding penalty or should I say clothes line of Alabama's Dre Kirkpatrick was as dirty of a play I've seen an LSU player make in a long time. The penalty wiped out a good punt return by Odell Beckham in the fourth quarter and it also sent Kirkpatrick to the locker room. I understand Mathieu is an emotional player, but swinging your arm at the head area of another player is bad sportsmanship.
