The Saints' money hunt

The Saints are busy trying to build a solid defense to make another run at the Super Bowl but it comes at a time when the team just doesn't have the cash under the salary cap to sign a batch of free agents.

WWL NFL analyst Mike Detillier said there are a number of current Saints players who could see their deals restructured.  Although it might not happen right away, Detillier believes quarterback Drew Brees will almost certainly have to be among them, even though adjusting his deal would be difficult.

''There will be some money management decisions made that will restructure contracts, because how are you going to pay for all of this if you don't?'' Detillier asked rhetorically. He said most contracts are what they call ''fluid.'' That means free up money for today that you must pay later.

''If there is some guarantee down the road to extend that contract and that's what happened with Brady,'' Detillier said, referring to the New England Patriots' Tom Brady.

Without these adjustments, Detillier said the Saints just won't be able to add the players they need to get back on top.
