The Boot Report: Rundown of La.footbal action

Jordan Fiegel, @JGFiegel

In a match-up of Tigers, LSU heads out to Jordan-Hare Stadium to do battle with Auburn at 6 o’clock.  The Bayou Bengals have looked dominant this season while the Plains Tigers have looked like doormats, barely eking out their first win over ULM in overtime last week.  LSU is the clear favorite in their first road game and first SEC game, but Coach Les Miles and his Tigers aren’t underestimating their division foe.

ULL gets a week to recover after getting shellacked by Oklahoma State last Saturday, 24 to 65.  The Ragin’ Cajuns next game will be their Sun Belt conference home opener against Florida International on September 29th. The battle for the Sunbelt Title looks like it will come down to ULM and ULL.

ULM QB Kolton Browning in the MVP in Louisiana so far, and the young man has raised his stock so far that he is likely going to be an NFL draft pick who could hear his name way earlier than any of us expected.   ULM takes on Baylor Friday night.

Grambling has had some hard luck in SWAC match-ups this season.  The Tigers lost their season opener by a point, 21 to 22.  And last week, they lost by a point AGAIN, 18 to 19 to Alabama State.  Grambling is 0-3, off, to its worst start since 2006, but Coach Doug Williams feels good about his team’s play going into their bye week.

After a bye last week, Tulane is back in action and kicks off against the Ole Miss Rebels in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome at 11 o’clock.  Ole will put stickers with the letters D-W on their helmets to honor injured Green Wave safety Devon Walker, who fractured his spine against Tulsa.  Tulane spokesman Roger Dunaway said that Walker is “alert and actively participating in respiratory and other therapies.”

Southern University decided to shake up their coaching staff after being shut-out by Mississippi Valley State last Thursday.  Coach Stump Mitchell was reassigned and defensive coordinator Dawson Odoms was named interim head coach.  The Jaguars take on fellow SWAC member Jackson State at 4 o’clock.  Coach Odoms remains optimistic about Southern’s chances in the SWAC.

The Colonels of Nicholls State extended their losing streak to 12 games with their 16 to 66 loss to Tulsa last weekend.  The Colonels have looked listless the first two weeks, but could get a spark against the Evangel University Crusaders at 6pm.  Nicholls last win came on September 1st, 2011.  Their opponent?  The Evangel University Crusaders.

Northwestern State fell to 1 and 2 after a loss to Nevada last Saturday, but the Demons hung with the Wolfpack throughout the entire game, losing 34 to 45.  In a match-up of Demons and Devils, Northwestern State hosts the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils at 6pm.

The 3 and 0 McNeese State Cowboys pay a visit to the 0 and 3 Southeastern Lions.  Southeastern has been outmatched in every game so far, and this week should be no different.  McNeese is riding high off after rattling off three straight out of conference wins before their Southland Conference opener tonight.  The Cowboys moved up two spots in the FCS Coaches Poll and currently are ranked 17th in the country.

Louisiana Tech gets a tough test when they take on the Fightin’ Illini at Illinois at 7 o’clock.  Tech’s averaging 56 points per game, and their high-power offense will go up against a stingy Illinois defense that’s only allowing 17 points per game.  The Bulldogs have won 9 of their last 10, dating back to last year and will be looking to add to that.
