The LaFourche Parish Sheriff's Office says a 19-year-old is charged with negligent homicide in the death of a 15-year-old from Larose. Spokesman Brennan Matherne says they responded to reports of a shooting around 2:45 Thursday afternoon and they arrived on scene to find Braxton Bourda laying on the side of the road.
"He was pronounced dead at the scene having suffered a single gunshot wound to the face," said Matherne.
Matherne says when detectives began interviewing witnesses to the shooting, they were told the suspect appeared to have been handling a gun in the middle of the road when it went off and struck Bourda in the face.
The investigation revealed several people were seen dragging the victim to the side of the road then fleeing. Bourda is a student at South Lafourche High School.
"And we developed Neely Gardner as a suspect in the shooting," said Matherne. "We could not locate him at that time but then around 1:15 in the morning he came and turned himself in."
Matherne says when they interviewed Neely Gardner of Galliano, he told detectives that he and the victim where handling the gun when it accidentally went off.
"Gardner then told detectives he dropped the firearm, dragged Bourda to the roadside then fled the area," Matherne said.
