Taxi vending introduced in N.O. and going national

New Orleans Carriage Cab is getting national attention for a new feature they are offering in taxis here in the Crescent City.

The refrigerated soft drink vending system the company has installed in local taxis is set to roll out in major U.S. cities.

The idea started when the owner's 14-year-old son suggested it.

"Initially, I thought was impossible but he kept after me until I found a patent attorney and the necessary technical experts to make it happen," Simon Garber explained in a news release.

Now they are rolling it out in 250 cabs in New Orleans and are working on all the steps to add it to hundreds more taxis he owns in Chicago and New York.

Garber is also selling to system to other cab companies.

"The vending machines will be accessible to any operator that wants to have this technology in their cabs," said Garber.  "Passengers across the country will appreciate knowing they can have a cold beverage on the go at an affordable price."

In New Orleans the cost is $0.99 for a 12 ounce can.

Watch how it works:

The company introduced the cab vending system in New Orleans because the local government worked with them to quickly roll it out and navigate the permits and other paperwork needed.

Garber added, "We decided to introduce the vending machines in New Orleans because it is the nation's hub of innovation.  The city welcomes new ideas.  Couple that with its long-term history of being a hospitality leader, launching the drink dispenser here made sense for the city and the tourism industry."
