Suspects in murders of local children arrested, identifed

NOPD Chief Ronal Serpas says detectives have arrested a suspect in the shooting death of 1-year-old Londyn Samuels.

Serpas says 24-year-old Kaleem Armstrong (above) is the man  arrested and charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder of the babysitter who was holding the little girl at the time.

According to Chief Serpas, Armstrong was pulled over for speeding on I-10 near the Crowder exit.  When the officer ran Armstrong's license, he found Armstrong had a suspended driver's license as well as outstanding attachments from Gretna for his arrest, according to investigators.

Police say by coincidence, just a couple of hours after Armstrong's arrest on the warrants, a homicide detective working the case identified Armstrong as a suspect in the murder of the 1-year-old.  The suspect was transferred to the Homicide Division for questioning, and was then booked on the murder and attempted murder charges.

The Chief also said in an evening press conference that there may be another person involved in the shooting.  Police have not yet identified that person.

In the case of the murder of 11-year-old Arabian Gayles, police say they are searching for 33-year-old Keith Ward (left) as a "person of interest" wanted for questioning in the case.

Gayles was killed when bullets sprayed her home, a shooting that also wounded another 11-year-old girl and a man inside an Ogden Street home.

Investigators "believe Ward was on the scene of the crime early Monday morning, and they think he may have critical information that can assist in the investigation," according to NOPD Spokesperson Remi Braden.

Anyone with information about either case is asked to call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
