Steve: Saints rookie profiles - Timothy Flanders

Could the Saints have discovered yet another undrafted rookie free agent at running back with Timothy Flanders?  The team seems to have a way of finding talented tailbacks a-la Pierre Thomas and Khiry Robinson.

Flanders attended college at Sam Houston State and may just stand 5-foot-9, but is thickly built at 210 pounds.  He has great vision, allowing holes to develop and runs with a low center of gravity.

The running back spent 4 years as a Bearkat and wound up being the Southland Conference's all-time leader in rushing (5,664 yards) and touchdowns (66).
Flanders is also a reliable receiver out of the backfield, and can play special teams as a kick returner.

The two big knocks against him are that 1) he has small hand, and 2) tends to go down after initial contact. Longevity is also a bit of a question, since he carried the ball 999 times in college.

The kid is a tough, competitive, hard-nosed runner, but making the Saints squad will be really tough.  You have Pierre Thomas, Mark Ingram, Khriy Robinson and Travaris Cadet as locks to make the 53-man roster.  That leaves Flanders and Derrick Strozier fighting for a practice squad spot, and so far, I’d put Strozier in the lead.
