Steve: Saints rookie profiles - Kasim Edebali
At 6-foot-2, 253 pounds, Kasim Edebali sure looks the part of a linebacker, and fills out his Saints uniform nicely.
While at Boston College he appeared in 49 games with 166 tackles, 11 sacks, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and 15 pass breakups. Last year in his senior season, Edebali had 67 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles along with 2 recoveries and five pass break-ups.
He is actually a native of Hamburg, Germany and learned the game of football over there. Yes football, not futbol; even though Edebali was certainly into the World Cup as he proudly showed support for the eventual champions.
The Saints signed him after his rookie mini-camp audition back in May. NFL.com’s draft analysis describes Edebali as a high-motor, effort-based pass rusher who could warrant developmental consideration as a situational 4-3 rush end or stand-up 3-4 linebacker. It goes on to say that while he is not a natural, physically gifted hunter, his football smarts, competitiveness and effort give him a chance.
Driven players are the type of guys you want on your team and Edebali certainly fits that bill. Can he earn a spot as a starter or back-up at an outside linebacker? Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan obviously saw something in Edebali to bring him to camp, and seeing him in action in the preseason will be a good gauge of what he can bring to this defense.
