Steve: Saints defense shines Tuesday; could Brees play Friday?

Saints head coach Sean Payton was asked if it’s safe to say Drew Brees, who missed another practice today with his oblique strain, won’t be playing Friday night against the Rams.

“I think like I said yesterday and the day before, we’re just going to take it day by day,” Payton responded. “So we’re not going to try to on Tuesday... we’ll just going to try and see where he’s at.  We’ll be smart though."

Sideline reporter Kristian Garic noted to me as we watched practice that the Saints offense runs a lot differently with no Brees there, and boy, is he right. It’s hard to really come up with an offensive play of the day.

Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan was specially asked about how his run defense struggled through the first part of the "Black and Gold Scrimmage" but made adjustments and really contained the rushing and passing attack later on in the session.

“We got our butts handed to us the first week of training camp, we know that,” Rob Ryan said. “I think we’ve had 2 good days in a row. The biggest thing is getting your run fits, and that always takes a little bit of time. Once you get done, you’ll be better and I think that’s a work in progress. We’ve got to be better in that, and we will.”

Ryan also had some high praise for a few of his defensive players. On rookie linebacker Ronald Powell: “Joe Vitt and Brian Young are doing a nice job with him. He’s a young guy; he’s got a lot of talent. He hustles, he’s doing great on special teams as well. We’re really excited about his upside.”

On cornerback Corey White:  “We love him as an insider corner, but he’s done some good things outside as well.   He started for us down the stretch and did a really good job in those games.  We know he’s an ascending player and is going to be really good.”

On rookie safety Vinnie Sunseri:  “He’s really had a good camp. At the OTAs, he struggled a little bit just getting the information and playing the way we want to play, but he’s doing a much better job and is getting better every day.”
