Steve: Saints rookie profiles - Brian Dixon
Sean Payton has made it clear since he got to New Orleans in 2006 that he doesn’t care where you came from - if you can play, you’ll be on his team. Cornerback Brian Dixon will be trying to do just that as the undrafted rookie from Northwest Missouri State University signed with the Saints after not getting selected in this year’s draft.
In his two seasons with the Bearcats, the 6-foot-0, 195 pound cornerback recorded 51 tackles, 6 interceptions and recovered a blocked punt and returned it for a touchdown.
He didn’t receive an invite to the NFL Scouting Combine, probably due to a high ankle sprain that forced him to miss a few games last year. At his Pro Day, Saints defensive backs coach Wes McGriff saw Dixon run a 4.41 40-yard dash and a 30-1/2 vertical jump.
While Brian went undrafted, his brother Brandon was selected by the Jets in the 6th round. Coincidence that twin brothers Rob and Rex Ryan both liked what they say from the Dixon twins?
The big knock against both Dixons is that they didn’t face a high level of competition in college. We’ll get to see what he does against NFL caliber talent Friday versus the Rams.
Brian Dixon has been standing out on special teams for the Saints during camp, which will get you in good graces with head coach Sean Payton. It will be interesting to see if he can crack the teams’ 53-man roster.
