Steve: Brees out again, Payton thinking about season - not Friday's Saints game
Saints quarterback Drew Brees sat out today's training camp practice as he is dealing with an oblique strain. He worked out off to the side doing some running and stretching.
"We'll make sure it's something that can't get aggravated again", Coach Sean Payton said. "When you look at what he does on a daily basis, with regards to torqueing his chest throwing the football, we just have to be smart it's calmed down. So we'll see day to day."
No Brees means more reps for the backups, and Ryan Griffin knows it's important for him to take advantage of the opportunity that's now in front of him.
"I mean every rep I can get, especially getting in there live with the ones and twos is great", Griffin said. "I'm just learning as fast as I can, and I'm trying to improve."
While fans may be getting excited we are in "game week" for the Black and Gold since preseason game #1 is Friday in St Louis, Coach Payton has a different approach.
"I just finished telling the players, this game Friday is a month away", Payton said after practice. "What we're doing Tuesday, Wednesday, there's a lot of things were still trying to work on here that are unrelated to that preseason game. I think we have to look at it that way. Obviously it will be our first opportunity to play a game, and there'll be a good chance for these guys to get reps, not only on offense and defense but in the kicking game."
