Both of the Hornets' first-round draft picks, Anthony Davis (concussion) and Austin Rivers (sprained left index finger,) will be out tonight against the Sixers.
Davis wasn't expected to play as he still has to pass his concussion tests. Ryan Anderson will get the start in his place. Meanwhile, Rivers hurt his finger in practice yesterday. He has struggled to begin his rookie campaign, making just 5 of 25 shots. Hornets 2nd-round draft pick Darius Miller will draw the start in his place.
Eric Gordon also remains sidelined. His right knee has been one of the more mysterious injuries in the past couple years, and everyone seems to have a different spin on it. There's been talk of microfracture surgery, but other reports indicate the 23 year old might be back around Christmas time, if not before. He has not played at all this season and was on the court for only 9 games last year.
Also of note: Coach Monty Williams was fined $25,000 for his criticism of the NBA's concussion policy as he waits for Anthony Davis to be cleared to return to the court. At today's shoot-around, Williams stated, "What I said was inappropriate and you have to deal with the consequences. My wife and I tried to turn it in a positive for my kids, but it’s unfortunate that it happened. You just try to move forward.’
Was Williams surprised by the fine? "The bottom line is that I've got to get back to who I am. I tried to be engaging and do all this stuff and it’s just not me", Williams said. "So whether it surprised me or not, anybody who gets fined $25,000 I don’t care if comes when you think it’s going to come, its still a surprise. It is what it is, and I have to be more aware of this platform that I have, and I have to be respectful to the league and its policies.’’
Davis needs to complete a series of tests before he is allowed to return to the court, according to NBA rules. The Hornets will also have to consult with a neurologist hired by the league.
