Sleet coming down around New Orleans

Some wintry mix was in the forecast, and we got it by mid-day in metropolitan New Orleans.

"A little disturbance is coming in from the west," said Channel 4 meteorologist Dave Nussbaum. "While the surface temperatures are just above freezing, it's cold enough aloft that those sleet pellets are able to make it all the way down to the ground."

Reports vary from light sleet to heavier accumulations, depending on the area.

"I'm standing in it, and I'm not getting wet," one Pearl River resident told WWL First News.  "It's bouncing off me like crazy."

Others have sent text messages to the WWL studio reporting heavy sleet in Marrero, Uptown, Kenner, even one report of a "sleet downpour" in Morgan City.

At this point, meteorologists don't expect to be cold enough to create driving hazards.

"We're not expecting any major issues with this," Nussbaum said.  "The ground is still pretty warm.  Just remember, a couple of days ago, it was around 70 degrees."
