Show looks at thoughts on legalizing pot in Louisiana

Louisiana Public Broadcasting will air a program tonight that discusses whether or not Louisiana should legalize the recreational use of marijuana. Kirby Goidel from the LSU Public Policy Research Lab is co-hosting the show.

"The show is going to cover all the bases in terms of marijuana including legalization and medical use and some of the obstacles there," says Goidel. "Also decriminalization, which seems the most likely outcome in Louisiana at least over the near future.

A release from LBP says mandatory drug sentencing costs Louisiana taxpayers millions of dollars to incarcerate people charged with simple possession of marijuana.

A recent survey from Public Policy Polling says that 53 percent of Louisiana voters favor making marijuana legal for adults 21 and older and regulating its sales.

The same poll found 59% of Louisianans oppose long prison sentences for pot possession.

The topic will air tonight on LPB at 7pm.  It will re-air in WLAE at 9pm.

Up to 20 "average citizens" will get a chance to give their opinions and questions to a panel of experts on the topic.
