Should you be able to carry a gun in a restaurant?

You can have a permit to carry a concealed weapon in Louisiana, but you can't bring your weapon when you go out to eat -- not if you're going to a restaurant that sells alcohol, anyway.  Lawmakers will be asked to consider a change.

"I want to be able to protect my family in the case we're out somewhere at a restaurant and there's a problem," said Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Bossier City).  "This just clarifies the law, it doesn't expand it."

Thompson also wants to make a clear distinction in his bill between restaurants and bars.

"You can go into restaurants that have incidental sale of alcohol, but we're not trying to expand it to get into bars," he explained.

Thompson says it is also important to realize this would not legalize being drunk while carrying a gun: "You lose a concealed-carry permit license if you've got a blood alcohol level of point-oh-five."

Thompson's bill is filed for the legislative session that begins March 10.
