Separate high school playoffs?

Should traditional public high schools have separate playoffs from private high schools, magnet schools, charter schools and other schools that can draw athletes from a larger geographical area?

That's the major topic hanging over high school principals as they gather for the Louisiana High School Athletic Association's annual convention beginning today.

LHSAA Commissioner Kenny Henderson says the proposal is coming from schools who think there should separate titles.

"There's people out there that are very, very much in favor of this; and then there's people out there that's very much not in favor of it.  So, I'm not real sure where the votes are going to fall," Henderson said.

Under the proposal, schools would compete against each other in the regular season as they already do, but then separate in the playoffs.

The meeting starts today with a vote on this controversial proposal on Friday, the final day of the convention.
Henderson says football could start separate playoffs next season with other sports following over the next two year.
