Scoot: Huckabee is helping Dems, not his own party!

The Democratic National Committee should start fund-raising events to raise money to support the possible presidential candidacy of former Arkansas governor and FOX News host Mike Huckabee!

The Republican National Committee opened its winter meetings last week in Washington with the goal of expanding the party’s appeal with women voters, younger voters and minority voters.  “Change course, modernize the party and learn once again how to appeal to more people” is part of the strategy of the new “Growth and Opportunity Project” of the Republican Party.  So, it is shocking that Mike Huckabee would address the meeting with his comments about women and birth control.  Huckabee may have been trying to criticize President Obama and the Democrats, but instead he struck a severe blow to his own party. Democrats are celebrating, and Republicans are saying “WTF!”

In promoting the Republican Party, Huckabee said, “If the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are hopeless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing them with their prescription each month because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government... then so be it.”

Even if you are a conservative Republican – read that again!  Huckabee, like other male conservatives, is putting all the blame and responsibility for sex and conception on women.  It seems to me that when it comes to sex with a woman, someone else is involved, and that someone is usually a man.  In a sexual relationship, do men bear any responsibility?  To even suggest that women in America need the government to give them birth control pills because they are incapable of controlling their sexual appetite totally ignores the reality that a fertile man is equally involved in sex.  And in how many cases is it the man who makes the sexual advances?

The Republican Party has a national image of trying to dictate behavior, and projecting an overall insensitivity to women and minorities.  I did not create that image, but it is a prevailing view of the party and there is admission within the party about the need to change. The meetings in Washington were promoted as an opportunity to project a new direction for the party, but these comments by Mike Huckabee only enhance the very same image the party is trying to get rid of.

Ironically, Huckabee himself told the meeting of Republicans that the party must widen its appeal and end its internal divisiveness.  Can he possibly be that out-of-touch with the meaning of what he said about women in America?

The truth that men like Mike Huckabee do not want to recognize is that it is men who depend on the birth control pill.  Men want to have sex without the consequence of pregnancy.  Men are quite often unwilling to make the sacrifice of using a condom.  Men can walk away from any pregnancy.  And it is men that seem to demand control of issues of sex and pregnancy.

Last year during the presidential campaign, a few Republicans made controversial statements about rape, abortion and birth control as if Republican men are not benefiting from the convenience of birth control. This is the mentality that continues to cripple the Republican Party.

I mentioned in a blog last week and on “The Scoot Show” on WWL that the stage is set for Republicans to win back the White House in 2016 and that may still happen, but not if men like Mike Huckabee are leading the party’s direction.

An opportunity to send the Republican Party in a new, more inclusive direction for the midterm elections in November and the presidential election in 2012 essentially became a fund-raising speech for the Democrats.

Right now, the Republican Party continues to allow itself to be defined by extreme views, and this is political suicide for Republicans on a national level. They are operating out of fear of alienating the extreme right base of the party – the same base that greatly contributed in the loss to President Obama last November.

In his comments to a meeting of the Republican National Committee, Mike Huckabee ended a sentence with “then so be it” as a way of saying it is out of his control.  So, I will end a sentence with the same words.

If the Republican Party wants to guarantee another loss in the battle for the White House by focusing on the personal issues of birth control, same-sex marriage and abortion – then so be it!

Scott since you are supposedly a journalist you need to listen to what Hucksbee said before reporting incorrectly. Have often heard you on the radiio snd your facts are incorrect..instead you are giving your opinion.

Response from Scoot!
First of all, I am a talk show host and do not promote myself as a journalist. Also, don't just make comments dimissing what you think I heard - please tell me what you thought Huckabee was saying!

More cluelessness
I think at times the Democrats must rejoice - it's not just Huckabee, take the Georgia Senate race - Paul Broun, the Republican who may face Michelle Nunn, is making equally looney statements. He has compared Obama to Hitler, called climate change a hoax, made offensive statements about Muslims, and called evolution a "lie from the pit of hell", causing over 5,000 write in votes in the 2012 general election for Charles Darwin. This brilliant politico is now raffling off an AR15 to donors for his primary campaign under the guise that Obama wants to take their guns. Michelle Nunn must be hoping and praying daily that she faces this guy in the general election. The GOP may want to change their image, if not their policy - these base wackos won't let them change EITHER. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/u-s-congressman-offers-free-ar-15-primary-supporters-article-1.1591328

And More
here’s a cringeworthy list of Republican attacks on women -- from just the last week: Congressman Steve Pearce claimed in his new memoir that women should “voluntarily submit” to their husbands. Mike Huckabee basically said that birth control coverage is for women who can’t control their “libidos.” On the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler said we should end a woman’s right to choose altogether since it “robs men” of fatherhood.

Great insight!
I am so glad that you point out that it is men who benefit most from "the pill." That is very astute and very powerful. I can't see many republican politicians agreeing with or echoing that idea though. They would be roundly criticized by the far-right members of the party -- Maybe even censured by their home state like Arizona republicans did to John McCain recently for being too liberal(!!!) Republican candidates cannot seem to win the nomination of their party without trying to "out-conservative" one another with talk of triple 50-foot-high electrified border fences, cutting Big Bird's budget, no abortion even in cases of rape/incest and no new taxes EXCEPT FOR WAR. A socially moderate republican can't get enough level-headed voters to turn out to the polls during the primaries. I liked John Huntsman but he was nowhere near conservative enough on social issues (or maybe other issues as well) to suit the extremists who seem to be the only voters who actually show up to vote in the primaries. Is there a "silent majority" of republicans who simply do not vote in primaries? If you have any ideas on how to change that, I think the republican party has a better chance of regaining the White House.

Mr. Man or Woman???????
It's 2014 and you're back! It's easy to attack someone when you can remain anonymous. If you don't like the host of this talk show why don't you move on to something that is more in line with your viewpoints?

Rand Paul helps rebrand the GOP
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/01/26/rand-paul-war-on-women_n_4669464.html "This whole sort of war on women thing, I’m scratching my head, because if there was a war on women, I think they won," Paul said in an appearance on CNN's "State Of The Union." "In fact, I worry about our young men sometimes, because I think the women really are outcompeting men in our world."

Why are you giving your oppinion in writing then? Not a journalist is true. Being in love with Demcratic points of view is also true.
01/26/2014 6:20PM
Scoot's a talk radio host and part of being a host and a human being on the radio, on a TALK station, is giving your OPINIONS.. are you cyborg that can't function unless the host is telling you what you already think or are prone to agree with? There's other stations that do that, while shouting at people - the rest of us, who want a conversation, will stick with WWL - which, by the way, dominates in the ratings.

Hero huckabee
I commend mike huckabee as he stands up for the dignity of women. Scoot is a cafeteria catholic constantly pushing a homosexual lifestyle
01/27/2014 10:11PM
I don't get how suggesting Democratic females are sex maniacs is supportive of their dignity. I don't go around calling all Republican women Stepford Wives even though a lot of conservatives preach and practice male dominance.

Rebranding Redux
Meanwhile, in Arizona, the state GOP chapter censures John McCain for, get this.. not being conservative enough. The demographics in AZ will turn it purple - Republicans must love losing, it allows them to play the poor persecuted victims of a changing America.

Illustrated in 2 words - "Archie Bunker." They have to cater to these people and they are the activists in primaries.

Claimed recently on Fox News that young girls become single mothers to get government checks because they're "bored in high school." http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/01/23/1272005/-Louie-Gohmert-says-goverment-lures-poor-women-into-high-life-of-single-motherhood

A Good Summary
01/28/2014 4:37PM
The government has already told men that they have no say in sexual matters. How about abortion? Does the father of the child being killed have a say in the matter? Something to think about.

Huckabee - Helping Huckabee
http://www.politico.com/story/2014/01/poll-mike-huckabee-leads-2016-gop-hopefuls-102813.html?hp=r6 - looks like now he gets a 3 point poll bump from that - Scoot, the Republican base AGREES with Mike - they love this stuff that the moderates and reasonable find offensive - there is a group in this country STUCK on Archie Bunkerisms.

Huckabee misrepresented.
What he has said is being twisted by democrats and media. What he is saying is that women are being insulted by democrats painting them as weak because the dems assume that women are not smart and strong enough to live their lives as they see fit. I think women are very strong and very smart about what they want and want to do. They do not need government to tell them or assume they are weak. I think the dems and media are lying about what he said. And looks like Scoot is too, or he is not understanding the spirit in what is said and just going along with the corrupt media. It is time to tell the truth. Instead of branding the man, why not ask him for clarification. No one group hates women or wants to push them down. Look at how many women are on the conservative side that are working hard to bring conservatism about. They are the backbone of the movement really. We want to see women empowered by their strong values, not by a corrupting government and ideology.
01/30/2014 2:01PM
Dead on
Agree Scoot, the Republican cheer leading for the acquittal of George Zimmerman, the refusal to acknowledge that the justice system is biased against minorities, and the exhaustted arguments on abortion and etc which is highlights everything that is wrong with the party.
01/30/2014 2:12PM
Not misrepresented - the GOP doesn't believe in values when it counts. They believe in the corporate over the individual, the corralling of wealth over the establishment of sustainable social aid, privatized sectarianism in school over public education, and only support the rights of the specific configuration of relationship or family life that they deem appropriate - they are also not pro life outside of the womb, supporting letting unemployed and children drift without healthcare, education or betterment, and the death penalty, among other things. Their hypocrisy between the values they claim and the way they vote is immense.
01/30/2014 2:39PM
Not sure what socialism/Marxism has to do with this discussion of Huck feeling that women are empowered and do not need government or the dems. Why are the dems so demeaning to women that do not think they can make it on their own? Why is it that the dems always feel that women cannot do well unless there is government to give away stuff to them? Maybe if our expectations were higher, more people would rise up to those expectations. Women are strong and smart---Huck knows it and empowered women know it. Dem media twisted it to fit their narrative.
01/30/2014 3:38PM
Twisted Words
First off - socialism/marxist word users would be wise to understand what they mean. All democracies work on a social/democractic (the idea, not the party) hybrid. The US is not a pure "free market" nor is any other developed nation - because in part we've agreed there are certain protections and concerns beyond that of profit. If healthcare plans can cover viagara, which is a NON ESSENTIAL medication, then why is providing birth control which has uses other than contraception a CONTROVERSIAL subject in 2014? You're the one twisting away from the actual positions of the GOP which were revealed by the remarks of people like Huckabee, Akin, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, and other fringe voices who do not respect Democrats or women and mischaracterize their policies.
01/30/2014 8:55PM
Scoot Belongs on MSNBC
Scoot, You belong at MSNBC. The outright lies you spew about Rev. Huckabee makes you less of a journalist and more of a hack. Huckabee was contrasting the Democrats position. You know that but clearly are taking an opportunity to jump on the MSNBC bandwagon that does nothing but lie. After years of listening to your station cover LSU and Saints football, I'm done. Y'all are a bunch of hacks.
01/30/2014 9:19PM
Scoot Belongs poster
Would prefer an echo chamber radio station that parrots what he thinks right back at him rather than challenging him or presenting a different viewpoint - how oddly politically correct of a "conservative" - to want other viewpoints to be ignored or unavailable instead of accepting some hosts think differently.
01/30/2014 9:21PM
was not CONTRASTING the Democrat position he was misrepresenting it - why is he not whining about insurance covering VIAGARA for MEN? This is hypocritical of him. Birth control is not just to allow sexual activity - it has medical needs for women and should be on the health coverage every BIT as much as a recreational sexual drug for males. Huckabee misrepresents democrats and women at every opportunity with this type of false equivalency.
01/30/2014 10:02PM
Mardi Gras Economy
Read this today, everyone looking for handouts. Mardi Gras Economy. The democrats are using women as pawns. They make them and everyone else think they cannot do it without the government. Notice that since dems took over the house and Obama came in, everyone is in worse shape than before. And they twisted what Huckabee has said. Scoot, I think you are better than this.
01/30/2014 10:40PM
Do you not blame Huckabee for twisting what Democrats say about health care coverage - that it should cover birth control for women? Why is this a debate and ED pills not a debate when they have less health value than the pill does for women? Also, why is it Republicans think corporations cannot function without tax loopholes, subsidies, and fat government contracts? Military companies funded pro Romney ads because Romney said he would increase the defense budget meaning they got bigger contracts. Police fight marijuana legalization because it means less money to their department for toys and busts - welfare exists on the corporate level from our government and is far more immoral than helping the unemployed.
